registered on the 14th January 1974. What are the chances it was manufactured before the 31st December 1973? :?:

Good news I recieved my dating letter from Gaydon yesterday and it confirms my car was built on the 12th December 1973! :D

I had a 1973 triumph on an L Plate, was 2 weeks out of being tax exempt.
I was the same I had a Stag January 73 got a heritage certificate cause I was sure it was made in 72. Turned out was built in the first week of 73. I was gutted :(
Although I'm very pleased that my 73 3500S will now get her free tax. :D

At 14th January registration, it's definitely worth the punt on a Gaydon Heritage certificate.

If absolutely nothing went wrong it is just possible for it to have been a January build, but most cars spent at least some time in rectification at the factory, so the chances are better than 50/50. Unfortunately, when it's that close to the wire, you can't tell a lot from the chassis no, justt he luck of the draw I'm afraid.

I'm sure I read somewhere that the Govt were thinking about reintroducing the rolling tax exempt status, with cars that were 40 years old instead of 25.. That's all gone quiet now though.. I'm pretty sure it was in Practically Carsick Mag a couple of months ago... May have been the edition that came out on April 1st...

Hi IIRC the government press release at the time said it was one time only and no
guarantee of a repeat. They are probably seeing how many cars come out of the
woodwork to see if there is abuse of the system.

I think we have Danny Hopkins and PC to thank for the movement in this in the first place. Danny's Dad is an MP and a petrolhead, which has obviously been a very useful thing!

I was wondering if the soon to be tax exempt vehicles will be allowed to change to the old style number plate (The black with white letters). Has the colour on the number plates got anything to do with Tax status? I ask because I prefer the look of the old style number plates.

Vehicles first used after January 1st 1973 must have the modern style reflective plates, it has nothing to do with tax exempt status.

If yours is an L or M reg I doubt the cops will worry!
In fact if a car is 1970's reg I doubt they will worry.
My mates 1977 mini has had black plates for years!

If it's supposed to have a modern plate then I will keep it on there. No point in giving the police an excuse.

I know technically they are illegal, and so does my mate, thats why he keeps a legal set in the boot.
OOPS!
Everso sorry officer, been to a car show recently and forgot to swap them back!

On the Black number plate front I've had them on my 1973 'M' plate for over 7 years and the majority of that time been driving daily in and out of London and surrounding counties and never had a tug even when speeding past our friends in blue (within the speed limits  ), I feel they just see an old car (probably older than them in most cases) and do not bother which suits me as I prefer the look of them :D
