SU HIF6

I may be in the same situation. I see you have a 2000 TC, its a pity its not a V8 as I would be keen to know what needles you ended up with. Where was the tune done ? I cant imagine many places having a bunch of SU needles.

If you want to know theoretical settings on a v8 let me know your current setup and I'll try and oblige. For 4 pots i can tell you the next weakest and next richest needles if that helps too. Mine seems happiest on KP needles rather than KL or KO. For HIF BAC needles are closest to KP. Mine has range rover heads, Freeflow air filters and electronic ignition.

The tuning was done at RE ( Rally Equipe ) Performance Centre Bury, Lancs. He is old school, lots of experience on minis and escorts back in the day. Has a good stock of SU needles. Aldon in the Midlands and Peter Burgess in Derby also have a good reputation. I'd get your car running fairly well before having it tuned or you'll waste your money. People turn up for a tune up when their engine has some fault maybe down on compression, a worn distributor or an inlet air leaks. Also make sure the cooling system is in good order; the car is run quite hard on the dyno. A mini turbo which was on before my car blew its head gasket spectacularly.

Thanks
The old girl drove on the road today for the first time since 1984 to the MOT station 20 miles away and came away with a spanking new MOT and no advisories - Woo Hoo !

Thank you. After the drive today I pulled a couple of plugs and they were a nice sandy colour, so I think I had better let things settle for a bit and see what mpg I average before going further.
I have never been one for squeezing the last mile out of a car and so long as I get reasonable economy I will be happy, the colortune suggested a very rich mixture, but the plugs tell different.

Edit
The new needles were BBG

There is nothing magical about the colourtune and the colour of the flame does not depend on the fuel. Any combustion process which takes place with an excess of fuel compared with air produces a yellow/orange flame. The orange flame is produced because there is insufficient air for combustion to be complete. When there is sufficient air for all the fuel to be consumed in the combustion process the flame will be blue. You can see the enrichment effect of the damper in the su carb with the colourtune as the flame changes from blue to orange when the throttle is opened quickly. If you set the idle mixture so that the flame is blue but the plugs are black after normal driving then the needles are incorrect.

I have been using one since the 1970's and I find some engines respond better than others, this engine wont give a blue flame at all but the plugs are a good colour.

Wicked! Nice job, Cobraboy. After her 32 year slumber, I'm guessing "Her brown-ness" still picks up her heels nicely when asked?
What d0es the sticker on the back window say? If it's cool, could you post a picture please?

PS How do I get the quote to appear in a box like the replies above? Pointers please chaps.

Thanks
The sticker is a dealer sticker - Roverpoint I believe.
I did not push the car at all on the trip, until I do some more shake down runs it will be steady wafting only :)
