Strange noise in neutral

When my 2000 automatic is in neutral it has suddenly started making a really strange buzzing sound.

I'm not talking about a vibration of gear stick sound - this is a quite loud buzzing which is louder with the window open.

When passing through neutral the buzz is just a brief zip noise. If the car is left in neutral the buzz just continues without let-up.

It is a very strange noise almost like an electric buzzing sound.

Otherwise eveything else appears to be fine. Apart from a fairly rough idle (though I don't know what is normal).

My first thought would be that the transmission filter is getting blocked. It will be noisy as you drive but you can't hear it then. (Yet).

I just went outside and had another fiddle to see if I could work anything out. The noise appears to be coming from behind the panel below the radio. It made the sound in Park when I started the engine and also in neutral. When gears are engaged the noise stops. It would be loud enough to hear when in gear.

I went for a spin to see if gear changes were normal - they were - when I parked up the sound still happened in neutral and when transiting neutral, but no longer happened in Park!?

Thinking what the noise sounds like - it's a whirring buzzing sound a lot like the kind of sound a pump makes with a stuck valve.

It's definately not a healthy sound - and came on quite suddenly.

I'd still think it's the filter. If the car was running on a ramp you should be able to locate the noise to the gearbox sump if it is.

I'm a novice with these things, but if I do as you say and conclude the filter is at fault - what then.

Take the car for a good drive using all gears. Drop out the sump, remove the filter and clean it, then replace lost fluid with appropriate spec?

What you say sounds a sensible course of action, all I would suggest is that as you're going to be buying a sump gasket (the rubber ones now available seem to work pretty well), for the extra cost involved I'd change the filter rather than cleaning it. It should have the later, snorkel type filter on a late-ish 2000. You won't know for certain until you drop the sump, because there's no way of telling until the sump is off, but you either take a chance ordering first, or wait to order until you know for certain.

Not that I am aware of. I use it daily and as far as I am aware teh previous owner used it frequently.

The noise appeared again today very briefly.

Now bit confused with these filters I've been looking for one on line and have come across references to square, gun and snorkle types.

It's the top one you need from Harvey's pictures the gearbox has been rebuilt and it is the filter as it's the mesh vibrating between the sandwich plate always done it  anouying I must say
