Step 3. Remove the clevis pin...

Just a towrope. But with the subframe assembly left behind & the interior removed, an enormous amount of the weight was absent from the car.
 
I decided to follow the suggestion made here that I should drop the diff. I tried taking the discs off, but it wasn't quite so straight forward - the rear right is completely frozen solid and I was unable to get a decent purchase on the top bolt, and of course I couldn't rotate it to provide better access.

I got the diff lowered, but still wasn't able to complete the removal because of the frozen caliper. I decided that I would undo the half shafts and just remove the whole final drive unit. It was challenging to get to some of the bolts with a big enough breaker bar to loosen them up - I drowned everything in WD40 and left it to soak in.

The next day with a fresh attitude I was able to wiggle everything around enough to get a breaker bar in and get the bolts out on the right hand side. The left proved a little challenging - because the right was seized it provided the resistance needed when I heaved on the breaker bar - because the left was free and turning there wasn't enough resistance to get the bolts undone. Two bolts came out after a bit of a struggle - I then had an epiphany - my windy gun hadn't been able to free the bolts - what if I turned up the pressure? Turns out if I had done then when I first started I could have saved an awful lot of blood, sweat, tears and swearing :oops:

I haven't actually got the final drive off the car as I ran out of time, but this weekend I will finish removing it and I will get to work on the calipers - I believe I promised the rust free California split pin to Harvey, so I will put that to one side...

I am keen to see your rust free split pin importation business succeed, as promised earlier I have earmarked said split pin for you. It has now been removed and is ready to be dispatched to the UK as the first (hopefully) of many California split pins. Of course, I will expect you to deal with the customs and any import duty payments that are required... :)

I dropped the whole final drive unit out of the car - even with everything out and accesible it was still a bit fiddly - heaven only knows how you are supposed to get the little b****rd out when everything is bolted in place...

Hello Willy,

They secure the damper plate which is made from steel to the pinion extension case which is made from aluminium alloy. All 3500 and 3500S have these fitted this way.

I'm certain they will have on Girling equipped cars, Willy. Perhaps most of the ones you see are Dunlop?

After weeks of anticipation regarding the arrival of my rust free split pin, I see that, yet again, after viewing that mutant offering, my hopes have been dashed. All chances of a profitable venture into the good, used split pin market have disappeared before my eyes......

No Chris, I've just checked the two diffs I have on my workbench and those on both my cars (all 2000TCs with Girling brakes) and none have jubilee clips on their front extensions. (They do all have the damper collars of course.) :D

As Ron said earlier, it's only the V8 diffs that have the damper plate that's held by the jubilee clips.

If that's how you feel seeing it, imagine how I felt trying to get it out...

Don't lose heart though - I have a line on a load of second hand split pins, most originate in California but some come from other south western states - I understand that they are the less desirable left handed split pins - would that effect their value in the UK? Please advise...
