Steering wheel

I want to remove the steering wheel for two reasons.

One, the indicator actuating mechanism is erratic in its operation and, I believe needs its contacts cleaning.

Two, the wheel is cracked in three places and I would rather like to replace it.

I have got the centre piece off ok although a previous owner appears to have thought it wise to attempt its removal by prising it off with a screwdriver!

Anyway, I can't get the whell off the column. I have applied WD40 and tried wiggling, pulling, banging the back of the wheel etc. but it possesses the tenacity of a debt recovery company.

I have thought of two methods. Either a slide hammer, which I don't possess, or a three legged puller, which I do. The problem with the puller, though, is that I don't think it will be able to purchace the rear of the wheel.

Any thoughts?

hi squashed nose
undoo the nut but leave it flush with the end of the column.
put your knees one either side of the wheel and pull upwards towards yourself.
then with a copper hammer smack it hard on the nut/column whilst aplying pressure with ya knees.
we have been doing it like that for years in the trade cos the tools to remove them are rubbish.

Cheers geezer.

Steering wheel off, indicators sorted (scraped the verdigris off the contacts), steering wheel back on.

Ham fisted me managed to break the plastic switch gubbins surround by overtightening one of the four screws! Mind you, it was badly sun damaged anyway so I would have replaced it at some stage.

What have you replaced the old wheel with Nick?
I had the same situation with a cracked wheel and now have a very nice (read expensive) wood rimmed wheel. Just needed a new boss in the middle and jobs right!
Also a little bit smaller to let me get my knees in, I am 6'8" after all.
Guy. :)
