Steering idler issue

My trusty TC never asks for any attention so the poor thing often gets neglected. I had known about a bit of play in the idler for a while (years) and I had a good spare on hand to fit "at some point". After years of putting off another job, I finally bought some rebuild kits for the carbs and set about with that task.
I had been noticing a bit of clonking from the left front for a while and occasionally a loud click when reversing at full lock or over bumps so I thought while the carbs are off I should change that pesky idler. Just as well really. Here's what I found.

Never seen that before! All done now, idler replaced. No more noises, and the carbs are behaving very nicely indeed. :D

Hi KR,

Breaking like that so I understand used to happen quite often, so T.R Spares over here in Sydney had steel plates cut to size and would provide them when you exchanged your idler for a reconditioned one. The plate takes the load instead of it all being born by the idler, so the cracking no longer happens.

I posted some pics of one of my spare idlers which has been reconditioned along with the one in my Rover which shows the backing plate that I am referring to.

I had the same issue with my steering idler box. I had to get hold of a good core, which then exchanged for a reconditioned unit.
