steering box

Yes. They are quite obviously different to look at. The 4 cyl top cover is cast while the V8 has a flat steel plate so it is easy to tell them apart. I'm not sure what the actual differences are though, the V8 one may be slightly lower geared and a bit stronger but that's just a guess.

There are two types, but AFAIK it's early and late, not 4cyl and V8. Early ones are fixed ratio, later ones variable ratio.

Don't think so Harvey. :? Every V8 I've seen with manual steer has the same steel top box from series 1s to the late '75 I pulled apart a while back and every 4 pot I've ever seen has the cast top. I'll have to check my parts books when I get home.

I think the answer, Harvey, is that there are two varieties of 4 pot manual box. There is a supplier change concurrent with the changeover to the 2200. The 2200 version is much heavier to drive, hence the demand for power steering conversions. But I'm not sure what the internal differences are.

I've seen two types on the 4 pots. Different length nose on the box. One fits with a stud and one with a bolt at the front under the nose hangover :)
