this subject has been done before but now i'm not sure.
black was never a p6 colour was it!?
i have a black 3500s and i presume its a respray, it originally had a huntsman roof which was coloured black so i presume the rest of the car was sprayed.
under the bonnet where the paint code sticker is it says black with a rover paint code??
why is this, any ideas apart from someone made it and stuck it on!
looks a genuine label bt what do i know?

part 2/wuld a black car look better with a huntsman roof or a black one?
i'll try for a pic

As far as I am aware Black was used for ministerial or defence cars forces.

As an intersting aside here in Christchurch New Zealand I recently saw an all Black P5B (pretty much in parts state now) which was origionaly registered to the Arch-Bishop of Canterbury.

Theoretically black was never available on the P6 but you could special order colours. However, as the roof has been recoloured, most likely the car has been too. It may be worth looking under carpets and easily removeable panels for signs of original paint. As for the label, the P6 body colour labels are identical to the P5 body colour labels and they were available in black so you can buy repro stickers from Scotts.
Do you have any history on the car? Original owners? As Graeme says, could have been government or Police.

There's a black series one 2000 Auto out in Amberley that came from the same place, I believe..

There were penny numbers of black P6's produced by the factory - a batch of Series I's for export in approx 1967 being the most plentiful. There was also a batch of black V8's produced for the Met. Police in about 1976.

My research in the production records shows numerous black P6's right throughout the entire production from 1964 to 1977. There are several large batches of black P6's particularly for government departments, the police, overseas embassy's and overseas governments, but there are also black P6's which appear to be individual orders, therefore black was available as an option but this was not obviously publicised in brochures. As a footnote, I have also seen the colour listed against most of the variants of P6, so it wasn't just available on 3500 or 2000 but was available on any P6.

There are also other less obvious colours which were used in the UK and not publicised, one of which was 'turquoise', so if you are unsure as to the validity of a particular colour on a particular car, it is worth asking and I will verify what the production records say for you, in my capacity of Heritage Archive Liaison.
