Starting problem

Gentlemen,

Just tried to start my Rover P6 3500 series 1 and have a small problem, turned the ignition key to start, starting motor engaged and after a few turns engine fired, released key and starter did not disengage so turned off ignition and removed key to find starter still turning engine.
I ended up disconnecting battery lead to stop it.
Question is the fault with the ignition switch or has the solenoid stuck on.

Could be either. Put it in "D" and see if it still cranks when you reconnect the battery, if it does it's the solenoid, if it doesn't it's the ign switch.

Harvey,

Thanks for that, never crossed my mind to do that test, it cranked in D so will tap motor in right place to see if it lets go or will take motor off.

Another job for the weekend. :D

Gentlemen,

Laid under the Rover this morning and before removal of the starter motor I gave it a tap with a hide mallet, I heard what I thought was a click so reconnected the battery to find the motor had disengaged.
Have stopped and started the engine with no problem and also found this morning that my brother has a spare starter motor for the rover so its coming to mine to be serviced and used as a spare.
