Starter problems

Hi went for a nice run today in Gertrude my 2000tc to stay in my caravan for the weekend.Arrived at the van without missing a beat and I was so pleased I text my wife (who hates the car) to let her know.

That was the worst thing I could have done because I later went out for some essentials (beer).i turned the key and was greeted with a horrible rattling sound instead of the turning of the engine.Suspect starter motor or could it be more sinister. What type of sorter is fitted to the series 1 model 1968?

Regards
Tony.

If it's an inertia starter the bendix have a habit of breaking up, and if that's the case the problem is getting the broken bits out of the bellhousing, hence all the gearboxes around with holes cut into the bottom of the bellhousing. Manual cars don't tend to suffer with any other problems in the same area.

Still you've learnt now not to mention how well it's going.....

Thanks.Just waiting for AA to relay me back to Liverpool. Was going to get it bump started but don't fancy doing that if there are bits of starter broken off down there.
Regards
Tony.

Tow truck - the most fuel efficient way to travel... Got to look for the up side :)
Thanks. That did cross my mind and I prepared for that.Thing was I rang the AA and the patrolman who arrived was that efficient and loved his old cars so much,he took the starter out and although it was in poor repair,he did a temporary repair and we got home no problem.

Have now had the starter rebuilt and refitted :D
