Starter Motor

Folks I have a problem, having sourced a re-conditioned starte motor I find that the bottom bolt thread on the bell housing is damaged, probably cross head. Any ideas as how the thread may be repaired or other options?

You could try running a tap down it to clean up the thread, it may be that it's just the first part that's damaged, if that doesn't work your next option would be to Helicoil it. This must be a V8 as the 2000/2200 starters are retained by nuts and bolts, the V8 ones are threaded directly into the engine block, not the bellhousing.

Sorry I shoul have said its a V8 S, and its the first few threads, does anybody know the thread size?

Glen :?:

If it's just the first few threads Glen, running a tap down should see you right providing you don't crossthread it. If you do need to Helicoil it, I've got a kit you could use.

Whereabouts are you?

Thank you for the information and kind offer. I live in Ashford Middlesex near to Heathrow Airport.

Our esteemed Royal Mail would be best then! Hopefully you won't need to Helicoil, but PM me your address if you need to (and don't have the necessary yourself/locally) and I'll pop the tools & a couple of inserts in the post.

Good Luck!

Hi Folks the latest news is Its working the starter is back on and its all systems go. A very nice neighbour who has classic minis and owns his own garage has taken pity on me towed the car to workshop retapped the first 3 threads renewed th cooked wiring and repalced the starter relay. I suppose thats cheating but amother 4hors on the freezing tarmac having cut my forehead and frozen my butt off it was an offer I could n't refus!!
