I have never worked with a ribbon speedometer, but if the speedo cables are the same, then what I do is to open or better still remove the glove box. You'll see the speedo cable has plenty of room to extend upwards. By feeding the cable up, that should allow you to slide the instruments out simultaneously. With the series 2 models, the instuments won't come out far, just enough to allow you to slide your hand in behind so as to undo the cable by feel.
