Speedo Angle Drive - both the same?

Hello fellow rover drivers,

my neverending story about the non working speedo has another chapter - after changing the seized speedo and the upper angle drive, my lower angle drive seemed to have gone on holiday. The speedo cable is not moving anymore (it did before). Since the cable itself is ok, i assume that the lower angle drive is the one to blame.

My question: How do i change it the best way and, even more important: is the lower angle drive the same as the upper one? I have two more angle drives for the dashboard, but i never saw one specified for the gearbox. Is it the same part?

I will put the car on a service lift next friday and would like to know if it makes sense with only the upper angle drives in my spares box...

Hello Olaf,

The angle drive on the transmission is different to the one behind the instruments, and neither can be fitted in position of the other.

Ron.

There's an access panel in the transmission tunnel inside the car, which on a LHD car is on the driver's side. It's only automatic cars that have a lower angle drive.

Hello Ron,

when the transmission angle drive is different, can someone point me to an ebay auction or provide a part number? My search for an angle drive always brought up the upper one behind the speedo, i have no clue where to find the lower one.

Any hint is appreciated, because i would like to have a working speedo again....

Hello Olaf,

The angle drive on the transmission as fitted to the BW-35 comprises a number of pieces as shown within the parts book, each with its own part number and no number allocated to the drive as a whole. The top 'L' piece has part number 277741. At the other end of the drive is the drive gear and spindle which has part number 556609.

Best of luck,
Ron.

Does it have to say rover on it?
Arent they a parts bin part that fits a wide variety of motor?
I salvaged one for a spare off a knackered S2 XJ6 BW 65 box and it will fit my P6's 35 or 65 autobox and the Triumph TR6's manual box!

It doesn't have to be a Rover part, but it has to be the right size fittings, and the Jaguar ones aren't. They will fit the box, but won't fit the cable.
