Can anyone who read my last message on this share any experiences they may have had with this noise issue
. The car is so smooth I want to get rid of the annoying ticking sound
Thanks

hi,
is the cable kinked or has it been kinked at any time, it should have a nice smooth curve round to the box. the angle drive out of the back of the speedo head could be at fault ie on it's way out ( worn inside ) or i have known them go tight so making them harder to turn causing a clicking/ticking noise. how did you get on with the oil pressure gauge, did you cure it, if so let the forum know as i get a lot of questions asked about it.

ian :D

Thanks Ian

I'll let you know about the guage soon. I'll collect the car on sunday but just working out what I can do myself and what I can't
Thanks a lot :)

Hallo,
My speedo stopped working recently whilst driving at speed on the motorway. It now makes that `annoying clicking sound`so I looked in the manual to guide me through, first of all, to check if it has broken behind the strip, then I can get a new one, or if it has just worked itself loose and came out of the drive connector. Now it says in the manual that the top dash rail is fixed with a screw at each end.....they don`t mention the 4 (at least) 8mm bolts that have to be undone first, which is easier if you have a small child to hand who is good with a spanner! I`m stuck now, with 1 (I hope) 8mm nut directly behind the instrument I`m trying to remove. I can neither get the binnacle out, or the top rail off :p What the???

Drew

Whichever type of speedo head you have there's no need to remove the top rail, and the reason you can't get at the last top rail retaining bolt(s) is you have to remove the speedo to get at it.

I have the strip type speedo in mine Kev.

Harvey,
I`m doing what the manual says, but they don`t mention the bolts, just the 2 screws on each end. I want to leave all the wiring connected see, just to have a look behind it? So, without disconnecting everything and pulling the speedo free.......how do I get to the cable connector at the rear of the thing then??
Drew

As in a lot of instances the manuals don't really tell you the way things are in the real world.
Firstly, am I right in thinking this is the car you've just fitted the s/h gearbox to? And has the fault happened since? If so I would check the cable routing.
As for removing the head, if memory serves me correctly, you remove the warning light cover, behind which are two screws which you remove then gently free the speedo a little towards the steering wheel. (Not too far.) Then reach up into the glove box and the end of the cable has a sleeve approx 6" long which you undo which releases the cable from the angle drive on the rear of the speedohead. Refitting can be done by pulling the cable through until you can get your little pinkies behind the speedo to refit the cable/angle drive.( Or the pinkies of the child labour you're using)
Test the angle drive while it's out, and spin the end of the cable in the speedo to see if that's working. All of this can be done without disconnecting any wiring.
One futher word of advice would be to disconnect the battery, if you wear rings, or work with spanners/tools behind there, it could cause a short.

It did happen since fitting the other gearbox, but about 1000 miles since then. The cable was disconnected from the old `box and connected to the replacement as soon as it was fitted, it hasn`t been re-routed whatsoever. I`ve already got the speedo in the position you mention, so I`ll go now and see if I can get the cable off the drive head. I`ve never owned a car where the factory workshop manual had so many ommited things in there ( or out of there I should say!) I reckon someone at the publishers was working for Ford on the side!
Cheers for your help, Drew
I`ve disconnected it and there are no signs that it has broken at the speedo head end. I drove the car in my driveway and it`s rotating ok so is still connected at the `box also. Now I can`t for the life of me get it back in. I have trouble getting pool balls out of their pockets too! Anyone in the Bristol area got tiny mitts?! :p

hi drew
I will be back from NZ this w/end, ring or pop over in the week and I will sort it for you.
I "may" have a spare cable!! ive got an angle drive and am sure I have a speedo!

Dave,
Nice one matey, hope you`re having a great time over there. I reckon everything is fine with it, I just can`t get the threaded sleeve to go back in properly, I`m a heavy handed get! You`ll be aware of the bit on the angle drive that turns through the middle of it, like a `wheel`? Well I turned it and the whole angle drive tightened up, whereas prior to this it was loose, so unless this shouldn`t have been touched :D I reckon once the sleeve is back in place it`ll be sorted. I wish I`d left it alone to be honest.

See you man, Drew
