Smell of petrol inside

Hello,

I've noticed that on here a couple of postings have been dealing with the issue of petrol smell coming into the passenger cabin with the fuel tank being close to full. I had this very problem a couple of weeks ago. I found a really simple way to cure it and thought I'd let you know.

After studying the BL pats book I wondered whether the links between the fuel cap and the tank might be to blame. You know, the rather complex succession of steel and rubber piping. So in the boot I removed the cardboard cover under the rear window and tightened up the clamps on the various rubber and steel tubing. And to my surprise this cured the problem completely.

This is especially nice as my 1974 3500, which I bought in 2000 (and which has the by then standard brushed nylon seats, so does not have the leather smell), still continues to very faintly smell of the perfume which the car's previous owner (elderly woman) had been using, mixed with all sorts of smells emitted from the underfelt and carpet, dust and a faint scent of engine oil. Just wonderful!

Cheers, Klaus
