Small bore silencer and tail pipe on large bore downpipes?

Quick question please.
Is it possible to fit a small bore silencer and then tail pipe onto large bore downpipe?
My very early 3500s is confusing me and I need to replace the tail pipe.
The outside diameter of the tail pipe tube as it enters and exits the rear tail pipe cylinder is 54mm which equals 2.125".
With a wall thickness of 1.6mm that would give an inner diameter of 5.08mm or 2".
The front section of the system looks like a normal 3500s.
Can someone please tell me if SB and LB flanges are the same and if a mix up of systems is possible?

I would be very grateful if someone could give me the OD dimensions of a LB tube for the downpipe and tail pipe to clarify my doubts!

They can be made to fit, but the flanges are different sizes and it doesn't look too pretty, so you would notice it.
 
i'd say if you cant get the right size go bigger not smaller? Cant help you with exhaust diameters as mine has definitely been messed with... stainless boxes and mild steel pipes.

My parts manual shows a smaller diameter end tube and flange fitted inside the end of the RH downpipe, before it meets the middle silencer.
I don't know if someone chopped an old 2" bit of tube and flange and put it in the downpipe allowing the flanges to match...The way it fits into the downpipe is
pretty rough and it looks like there is plenty of play.
Does anyone know if the reducer/flange bit of end pipe is seam welded all the way around the downpipe or tack welded?

Hi Philippe,

Have you tried a regular exhaust/muffler business? They would be able to interface the two using either a tapered piece or by another suitable means.

Certainly that has been my experience.

Hi Ron, thanks for your input. I am just trying to get to the bottom of this mystery as it seems I have a SB rear tail pipe and middle silencer on a LB front downpipe.
If anyone could kindly measure the diameter of their rear tail pipe that would help greatly, especially if they have an original system still on the car.
