Slack in timing chain - how much is too much?

I've been taking the front end to bits to mend a sheared water pump bolt...

got that sorted, re-tapped thread after very carefully drilling out the snapped end.

so how much play is allowable in the timing gears?

this is what I have at the moment

Stick it back together, or purchase some posh timing gears?

Thanks :D

If you look at the centre ally of the cam wheel it looks very clean compared to the block behind it, and there isn't a great deal of play in the chain, which could mean that they've been recently replaced, if you want to upgrade from the standard set-up to something better now's the time to do it, if you just want standard you could leave it all as it is, but as you're in there, and bearing in mind the relative cheapness of a standard set, then for peace of mind I think I'd replace it.

cheers Harvey - it does indeed look very clean. This is supposedly an RePuted engIne re-builder's work, and as they say on their page for the upgraded gears and engine rebuilds "all our engines are fitted with these when rebuilt" apart from this one. They are probably new original with the engine rebuild (about 30K ish ago now).

Off to some websites now and see what I can order :)

Real steel can supply you with Cloyes duplex steel timing gear set for fifty quid. I bought one today! It has 2 extra settings, either retard valve timing or advance it. Factory setting is probably ok for stock engine.

I'm waiting for the postman to bring me one of those! Ordered it Monday evening, hope it'll be here for the weekend :)

Cloyes installed. The play evident on the old set with the drive side tight made this thread fairly academic...

News one on beautifully, torqued up, used the standard setting on the crank sprocket. Thanks real steel ☺ :D
