I do not ever recall seeing a Rover P6 Cabriolet can anyone tell me anything about them ?

Back in the day I seem to remember Crayford used to turn Fords in to convertibles particularly the Cortina could this be one of theirs ?

Thanking you in anticipation of your responses.

Cheers

Hi Art. That one there is an angle grinder special, built by an enthusiastic amateur.
There were two 'official' convertables, a white one built by FLM Panelcraft (who built the estates) at Rover's request and a dark green one built by swiss coachbuilder Graber. Both are 2 doors and both are still around, having been well restored.
There have been quite a few home built versions though.

Thanks KR and RD :)

Now I know why I have never seen one before.

SKK 23 H seems to have an alarmingly factory like colour scheme for an Angle Grinder Special, not too shabby a job, though I was only looking through a hedge hence only the one pic.

Reading Ricks P6 blog http://www.ricksp6.co.uk/oldcar2.html made me laugh - "One fun moment came as we were air-sawing through the roof section just behind the windscreen surround, only to find that the whole panel unbolted, as we intended to use the roof as a hardtop, we quickly welded over the cut before unbolting the panel."

The process of becoming an expert is obviously laden with pit falls.

Thanks for your help :)

Yes, very steep learning curve back then ! At that time we barely knew what a P6 was, and if I remember rightly had no manual available, so it was all trial and error, that's how come we ended up over-engineering the sill strengthening just to be safe. Roughly 20 years ago now !

Here's an article from Practical Classics including the FLM convertible. http://www.p6index.co.uk/bobgardnerp6.pdf

I've seen two now, and both were a little ill thought out in that they had no soft top roof to put on if it started to rain.

Yes, fairly useless in the UK without a roof. Mine was ugly but it did keep the rain off  I used it as a daily driver for quite a while.

SKK 23 H had no obvious sign of a roof the cockpit had a substantial looking cover over it.

I am wondering how the middle door post stays attached I don't imagine the rear doors are particularly light ?

Luckily the majority of the strength of a P6 is in the sills, bulkheads and lower sections, the roof structure is quite weak, so seperating the top of the B/C post doesn't weaken it too much, of course you can add extra structure if you want.

Usually you will be making it a 2 door, so you can weld over the opening for the rear door which adds considerably to it's strength.

It was up for sale at Beaulieu the other year - he wanted about £5k for it, and it really was an angle grinder job. Looked a right bloody mess too, so doubtful that the DVLA know it's been chopped!
