Series 1 (4 Cyl) Starter Solinoid Earth

Does the S1 starter solinoid (mounted on near the right hand lights on my LHD car) have an earth or does it earth through its body?

Hi, One of the wire connections is an earth for the relevant circuit, it disappears into the loom to join other earth wires and earth's else where or there maybe a flylead to the relay fixing screw. The case of the relay doesn't need to be earthed to work.

Thanks Colin, my lighting wiring is a bit of a mess (fitting relays this weekend) I do recall seeing a smaller gauge earth wire that I could not account for.

I'll post a photo tonight (Aust time). If I'm suppose to have a spade connector at both the top (incoming red/white) and bottom (earth) of the relay then I'm up for a new one. The bottom spade is missing. Can see where it might have once sat in the plastic/bakolite.

Fuzzy picture attached.. You can still see the spade fitting at the top and the absence of one at the bottom. I assume this is not right?

I take it that your starter motor is a inertia type, according to my P6 Manual, there are only two small wires to the solenoid. white/red to actuate it from the switch and a brown to the voltage control box , but I would expect that to be a 3/8" wide Lucar. The brown goes to the same terminal as the battery cable. If you look in the manual you can see which wires go where. What year is your vehicle to help identify the circuit ?

Hi, Ahh you're talking about that sort of solenoid, in which case yes it does earth through its case to operate. if it's not working then first check and clean up the screw mountings.
