Seatbelts & kids

All,

Does anyone know the rules on children in the back of cars that have no seatbelts fitted?
My car currently only has 1 lap belt in the back, nothing else (until the new ones I've bought arrive) so what are the rules on kids of various ages sitting in the back of the car UN belted?

Ta

The way I understand this is a child Over 135cm or 12 years old can sit in the front, smaller or younger children above 3 years can sit in the rear as long as your car was not fitted originally with belts. Under 3 can't travel. If you fit belts then they MUST be used. On the other hand I would never put a child in a car without seatbelts for safety hence the first thing I fitted were rear belts, but that's your choic.

Ahhhh Mick, I'm assuming your car didn't need to have mounting points and captive nuts welded in like mine does? Choice isn't a word I'd have used personally.

As I said, I have 1 lap belt in the back which is always used on the smallest traveller, but until I can fabricate mounts for belts that's the way it is........ However I have more than one child that wants to accompany us to the shows and only one of me to drive the car so can't take other cars - so based on that, I need to decided which child deserves to die on the way to Luton - any views on that one?

I have said my views on that one, no child in my car without a seatbelt each.
Have you no mounting points for belts Jim, Although mine had no belts the points were all their.I was under the impression all series 2 cars had the points in the ready for belts. what is the lap belt fixed too ?

I have a set of mounts in the centre, but nothing in the outer edges..... Fancy doing me some pictures Mick?

remove the rear seats, one point is by the the doors and the other hidden by the rear parcel shelf cover. then the third point is between the two seats, probably where you lap belt is.. will see if i can dig some pics out tomorrow

When we take the old mans boy with us ( Ben 8 years ) we put him in the front in his car seat . The old man sits in the back looking mean ! As i understand it if no belts fitted anyone can ride in the back . But i stand to earn more insurance money and finish the last of the mortgage if i wipe the old man out

Stina, I think your nearly right, anyone OVER 3yrs can travel in the back if seatbelts were not fitted. UNDER 3 yrs they CAN'T travel at all

They must be left at home, alone, as it's the safer option

All the mounting points will be there

What ? In the boot

Worked for me

Buggers won't fit in there now though

To solve this problem I opted for the continental touring boot mount..... Rovers first people carrier
Reckon you could put a big wingnut through the rear window of the sd1 and put the spare on it?

That might generate a photo or two

There was a set of rear inertia seat belts on Ebay they were off a MG? they looked good with plastic covers on, I used rear belts from a Saab 900 I had to make a pillar to mount them on the rear parcel shelf and the buckle came from a Golf rear belt. The problem with most of the inertia belts is they stick on the top of the rear seats.

Also found this old thread when i was searching for info which explains the use of MG-F belts coupled to Rover 25 buckles. Might give it a go?

In an effort to stop the little beggars moving I have got myself some nice period kangol static belts to tie mthe kids down in the back....... I'm just missing two bolts - anyone know where I can get some from?

Thanks

Hi, as I am sure you are aware. All seat belt bolt threads are the same i.e. 7/16 unf fine 20 tpi.
It doesn't matter what manufacturer, which year. So any one will do until, I guess what you are
asking for is a specific head.

Hope this helps.
