Hi All

Some of you know that my 2000TC had a fight with a tree and came off the worst. I'm about 300 miles from home first time I've ever had an accident in the US and in what is a rare car in the US for repair work and parts.

I posted here and on RoverNet that I was in trouble. Within hours of me posting Dirk Burrowes called me to tell me that he could trailer my car tp his company's lot and he had access to a Rover P6 body shop chap. This was amazing in it's self but he drove two and half hours to get here and pick up Rolly and refused to take Amy money for fuel.

That along with all the kind offers of help and sympathy here remind me how good you folks are. I'll post pics when I get home.

But I wanted to say thanks to every one.

Cheers,

Steven

So,....... that's why you should come to Dirk's event and meet all the passionate Rover folk who attend. It's the largest Rover event in North America!
Yes, ........North America!

Thats exactly where ill be in two weeks time. Not only will i meet other Rover nutters but I will get to see my Rover.

Hey Pilkie

Actually Patrick Hiron (the owner of that 3500s) has already been in touch about selling his car to me. I must admit that I'm tempted but there are other considerations.
I should know by midweek whether Dirk's body chap reckons Rolly is savable. I'm not sure if I like the idea of a reshell. I know a lot of Rolly's history and a reshell would take out a lot his ID.
Also after spending quite a bit on the engine rebuild I don't have a great deal of cash available to buy Patrick's car.

Good news is from what I've heard from other us rover owners that my classic car insurence company are well known for being fair and decent about paying up. So it looks good.

So with luck Rolly can be saved and I'll have him back on the road in a few months or however long it'll take. If it is the case I will most likely look into the cost of a full respray as it'll be there anyway.

Hello Steven,

Gosh... Lucky you were not hurt.!! How quickly were you travelling when Rolly hit the tree?

Ron.

At first sight, that looks recoverable. Just depends to what extent the crease in the front has pulled the inner wings in. I think you might have said that one of the doors no longer opened? If so that implies needing to take a very close look at the front of the base unit. There's a video around of a (much more serious) concrete block crash test of a P6. Anyone know the link? That gives you a good clue of what happens in extremis and hence where to look for damage. Key issue seems to be the bulkhead pivoting back agianst the joint with the floor/sills.

Commiserations to both you and Rolly!

Chris

Yes, well once the apraisal for insurence is done Dirk says he'll take a look at things wth out he bonnet and with the front pulled forward.

Ron, can't be more than 20mph I was only 40 foot from where I had started.

If the crossmember hasn't been pushed back then it will repair easily, if it has, because of the way they're designed to progressively crumple, they just don't pull out again properly. By the looks of that I'd say that will go again, I've done ones that looked far worse than that and the crossmember was still in the right place.

Thanks for the advice Harvey. Dirk thinks the crossmember may be pushed back. We won't know until the insurence apraisal has been done. Then we can pull the the front panel, bumper, stricker panel and radiator. We should get a more accurate picture of a viable repair once there.

Latest update from Dirk and George,

Engine runs fine, front cross member pushed back which then made contact with the sump and pushed the engine back. He has a factory P6 frame jig to align the front end to spec and reckons that they may be able to rescue the front end. Keeping my fingers crossed!

Steven

Good lord! There can't be many P6 jigs in captivity, let alone in the US! Tell us a little more about Dirk and George please!

Chris

Check out his website http://www.roveramerica.com/ I believe there is a bio of him there. He'Rynery generous helpful chap. I don't know what I would have done without his help this last week. I believe the jig is genuine, but i will double check when we talk tomorrow.

So latest news is that the front has been pulled straight, damaged crossmember removed and replaced with a new item from an undamaged base unit front end. New bonnet sourced from his stock, along with bumper, valance and windscreen. I'm worried how much I willl owe him at the end, but it should be worth it. Sorry folks I forgot to ask about the jig.

I am gobsmacked! Having looked at the website - especially that rear ended P5B with nothing behind the back doors - I have no doubts of their capability to do the job. And that is a cracking rate of progress compared to what I'm used to in the UK.

Look forward to seeing the result!

I trust your aches and pains are subsiding?

Chris

You NEED! to get an estimate or a quote to do the work as the ins will need it,unless they are paying out for a total loss and you keep title to the car to fix or scrap!!

I have discussed and agreed to amounts available for the work on the car. I am paying for the repair after recieving the payoff from the insurance co. The INS had writen off. I have spoken with the ins co and they have assured me that the car will not be listed as wrecked. And the agreed valuation is being respected.

Cheers,

steven

Excellent news from your insurer!
The british companies could learn a thing or 2 from the US,rather than F##K about dragging it out for as long as poss hoping it will go away, then trying to screw the owner out of his rights!
