Rover 213 : classic or not?

hi Sully!

Well, nobody seems to rate it at the moment - but there are very few around in anything like decent nick, so at least it's going to be rare. Both the Honda engined 213's and the injected 216's are very good indeed to drive from the point of view of the drivetrain. The suspension is less adequate... It suffers from very short wheel movement. But that need not stop it being a classic.

Very imminent future classic I'd say!

Here's mine, so now you need to show us some pictures of yours!

I would say yes too & no doubt they will be rarer than P6s and P5s in few years (if not already??).
IIRC, there was another Forum member on here in the not too distant past who had a very nice 213?

Going by the HowManyLeft website, there are only 178 licensed Rover 213's of all types and a further 149 SORN'd.
It also tells you there were about 110,000 registred in the UK in 1995. So that means you are looking at a current roadworthy survival rate of something like 0.17% :!:

BTW, welcome to the Forum. Can you tell us a bit more about your car and it's history?

Hi and welcome to the forum, any vehicle over 25 years of age makes it to classic status for me :D

The majority of cars made today will not survive in my opinion due to the way they are designed, crumble zones etc and upto 95% recycleable not to mention all the expensive electronics, air bags etc the joy of being able to tinker with them by the owners is rapidly disappearing therefore taking a large part of the fun out of owning them as classics if they make it :?

If I am over 25 years old, does that mean I am classic :?: And I thought that I was just a dinosaur :D

Seriously, I would agree on the 25 year old thing as a general rule. However, I would argue that something like a Rover 213 is a neo-classic. Given that Rover is no longer producing, the scarcity of the vehicle and the very impressive Honda engine it was fitted with? Though, definitely tend to agree that cars produced maybe after sometime around early 1980s will have a very low classic survival rate for all the reasons you point out. Also, when cars like Rover P6s were produced, I think maufacturers had a different ethos and produced lots of spares geared towards being able to maintain/repair a car for an extended period (and still catered for the home mechanic). This has now changed somewhat - with foucus on new cars being very much a consumable item with the industry geared towards new car buyers replacing their car every few years.

Yep. We've gone from an environmentally sustainable model to one which is not. Given the figure that 90% of a car's energy use in its lifetime is during its manufacture(the other 10% is the fuel an average car Burns in its lifetime) it seems ridiculous.

Hi sorry for late reply.. busy life i lead lol. It may be a classic but i found out why i cant get classic insurance and thats because i am only 24 years old lol. 1 insurance company told me that the 213 was not iconic enough, my reply was what is iconic then. she said a vw golf gti 1997 model ? i said no thank you the rover is no longer being made there for its a classic.

History of Gertrude (my 213)

3 owners, i recently bought it from a trader who says he aint a trader. its got 33k on the clock registered in 1989 on a G plate. In colour white, body is solid had few bits welded 4 years ago, since 2006 and today it has covered around 250 miles.
Body work is okay but not brilliant. today i have been doing a few lil bits to it and hoping it will last lol.
Headlining has snap in half due to the rain the other day lol sunroof was open slightly and now i have to find a new headlining which i bet isnt easy lol

will try to get pics up in next couple of days or even today if my phone decides to charge !! lol

Gertrude is a fine Norse name for a Rover - pae is also christened Gertrude by the extended family:)

Hi welcome , if you consider it a classic then i'm sure it is  It certainly wears a classic badge :D

well i chose gertrude as its G reg lol i only notcied after posting that you named yours gertrude too lol :) i like it, its defo a classic to me. i remember buying a 216 vp auto with leather for £100 when i was 17. but it kinda went througha mot and straight to breakers yard :( if i knew today that i wuld of had Gertrude i would of kept it for the leather lol
