Rev counter over reading

This afternoon the rev counter decided to over read by a good margin. On tickover claims its doing 3000+ revs (it isnt!!)

I was using my RPM counter to estimate my speed as the speedo needle oscilates wildly.

Any quick and easy fixes for the RPM dial for an incompetant?

A very odd one indeed. I have too experienced this on my V8. This happens when I leave the car out on a hot day and the dash/instrument binnacle warms up. The rev counter then reads around 2000 rpm at an actual tickover speed of 1000rpm. It all returns to normal once the sun goes to bed and everthing cools down in the evening. All very strange, but I am none the wiser. ???

Now working perfectly! Didnt do a thing! AND the fuel gauge which hasnt worked for over a year now does as well!! If only the other faults would fix themselves!

This is odd. I had a dash left out of one of my p6's. majority of the gauges were faulty, clock, speedo, tacho and fuel... Being hot in australia this is probably why. Now they work perfect its winter!
May put some heat shielding in between the dash and the gauges!

I suspect that some of that heat shielding comprising aluminium foil within a clear plastic lining may do the trick. I will see what I can get. I will then remove the instrument pod and tailor some shielding to fit around the top and rear. It won't be visible once the binnacle is refitted. I will keep you posted of effectiveness once it is fitted.

I've fitted modified mine a little bit. Aluminium heat shielding and a smaller fan..
Temperature is good, and no issue at all with over reading. Simple modification as the fan is attached to the back of the cluster (speedo, tacho etc...) I get a reading of about 15degrees.

I should of taken photos will if I ever take the dash out again, but no more issue.

Great, Andy

Mines reading high all the time, and when I switch on the ignition (engine not running, ign light on, the rev counter hits max rpm for a moment and then drops back. When the engines running, it also reads about 4000rpm even though the engine is ticking over at the correct tickover speed. Any ideas?
Engine runs beautifully... Engine has standard dizzy, with points in it I think..
