Returning to the fold

Hi everyone, my name is Dave, I live on the Kent coast. I am thinking of returning to the Rover fold, having owned two previously; the first a 1972 White 3500s (originally Tobacco leaf) reg. MGW 60L, which was given to me just after I had purchased my first house in 1987. It was in a bit of a mess though, but a runner. I subsequently restored the car to pretty good condition & enjoyed driving it for a few years. I had always hankered after a Vitesse, & purchased a Monza Red example in 1995, A77 XJM.This was already in good condition, I did very little work other than servicing & fitting a Rimmer Bros. stainless exhaust which made it sound fabulous. My missus ended up hankering after more kids though, when number 4 arrived that was the end of that. The vitesse remained in the garage for years & was later sold after I moved to the coast. (there was way too much work to be done on the house to even think about doing anything to the car)

Although the Vitesse was quicker & handled corners without much body roll ( I did used to give 'em some welly!) there was something statesmanlike about the P6, & it is one of these that I would like to buy, namely a 3500s, preferably '72 or '73 with leather seats. My current financial situation is not great, but as luck would have it, my 25 yr. endowment matures soon & some of the funds may find their way to financing a P6 V8 Rover, boy do I miss that lovely burbling sound & the fabulous torque. I am quite prepared to be patient & find a good example at a reasonable price, either that, or a cheapie that runs, but needs some work, so long as the structure is sound. ( the one I was given had rotted all along the length of both inner sills). There was one earlier today on Ebay that sounded quite promising, it was Blue (mostly) with cream leather interior, was not currently running, due to the carbs being removed. It had a lot of history & sounded genuine it went for £510 , I was surprised at the low price, someone got a bargain. The only problem was that it was near Manchester. Transportation may well have cost as much again!

One thing that concerns me though is the petrol situation for the V8 engine, the last time I drove the Vitesse, 4 star was still available, how do they cope with unleaded, are any modifications necessary/ timing adjustments etc.?

Hi and welcome to the forum!

Anything you spot or want opinions on in your search here is definitely the place to act!

Unleaded i think is generally accepted as being ok, and if it turns out not to be then swapping to sd1 or later heads will fix that!

I run mine on tescos 99 octane super with vitesse heads and it behaves fine apart from some pinking when under heavy acceleration.

The bigger problem with petrol these days is the octane rating rather than lead content on the v8 at least.

Rich.

Thanks rockdemon, is your name due to your taste in music, or are you a geologist!

Do the vitesse heads give a lower compression ratio, or do they have harder valve guides to give better protection for the lack of lead? or is it something else?

Which model do you have, what colour etc?

Hi, I'm a guitarist and the name i use on other forums too so i used it here too :O)

The SD1 heads dont alter the compression - but they are guaranteed to be unleaded friendly i believe, where the older heads whilst in practice fine with unleaded arent specified as such.

So mine is 10.5:1. The vitesse heads in particular are meant to give more gasflow, but in my case they were only chosen because i had them already as spares when a bolt head snapped in the p6 head...

Mine is one of the oldest series 1 v8s, burnt grey ( grey/brown mix). THere's a thread where most of the trials and tribulations go called 'pae' :)

Ok, cheers Rich, I'll look up your thread, hopefully there will be a few pics. Great forum btw. from what little I have read so far, it seems to be a very helpful & friendly place full of like minded people (obviously fellow masochists), trying to keep these fabulous old cars on the road. There are too few older cars seen around these days. To be perfectly honest it is only older cars, particularly Rovers that turn my head now. You can keep all your boring modern boxes, even the expensive ones hold no interest whatsoever.

Welcome to the forum Dave, we are getting the Dave numbers up know too
I have a 73 3500s and I also use tesco's 99 as a rule with original heads for the last 7 years no issues to date but I do add lead replacement to every third tank just in case :?

Thanks for the welcome V8 guy & grimV8. I remember back in my school days there were once five Daves in my class. Must've driven the teacher mad!

It's nice to know that the early motors can hack the unleaded, not that it would have stopped me from buying one. But it's one less thing to worry about.

I have loads of pics, particularly of the 3500S, but all taken back in the day (late 80's) I will ask someone more technically minded if it is possible to get them up on here.

All The Best

Hi Dave and welcome to the forum.

I have 2 cars, a 72 3500S which I generally use everyday but is undergoing some surgery at present :( so I'm running my other car, a '66 2000 SC.

...and guess what....???

Yes another Dave :D

My mate has a Labrador called Dave, he says lots of fellas look round in the park but only one dog ever comes running :D

Hello Dave , i use castrol valve master plus in my v8 , it has an octane booster in it . Good luck in your hunt .

Cheers fellow Daves, not forgetting you Stina! & thanks for the advice. There must be something about the name Dave that means we all have a love of old Rovers imprinted in our DNA!

Looking forward to meeting you guys at some point, perhaps at a meeting or show, for a good chinwag.

I think that makes me unique then!

Good luck with your search Dave. I thkn that around the period that you're looking at the engines changed from 10.5:1 compression ratio ot 9.35:1 which means you should be able to use 95octane fuel.

My car had a 10.5:1 engine and I fitted SD1 'heads along with thick composite head gaskets and, after a bit of tuning, it runs fine on 95 with no additive.

Funnily enough, EccentricRichard, my second name is........... you've guessed it..... Richard, no kidding!

testrider, I said that I was looking for a 72-73, as I thought that later versions had less power, & I don't want any of that namby pamby stuff. I want max. BHP! but I have seen some very nice later examples both on here & on youtube, where I have been watching P6 Rover vids. what a saddo eh! one thing I have noticed though, the later examples tend not to have leather seats & that is one thing I will not compromise on, especially as I would imagine that trying to get hold of a decent set of leather would not be easy or cheap these days. I remember getting a lovely set of black box pleated leather seats for my 3500S for not a lot of money, but that was well over 20 yrs. ago.

Dave

Later cars have 9.25:1 compression ratio so are better on unleaded fuel. There are plenty of performance mods you can do to get back the lost urgency. Leather interiors aren't as rare as you'd expect... You just need to find a car being scrapped for bad bodywork.....

Rich.

Hi Rich, is the lower compression ratio the only modification to lower the power in the later cars, or did it also have some kind of emission control nonsense added as well. I guess what I really want is a P6 with Vitesse performance ultimately! I did a few cosmetic mods. to my Vitesse, i.e rising rate fuel regulator, K&N filters & Stainless performance exhaust, complete with tubular manifolds. It did sound pretty good & was fairly quick. I will undoubtedly want to do similar stuff to any P6 that I buy. Although I would not want to change its outward appearance, it is beautiful enough already (something I always tell the missus, especially now that I want to buy a Rover!)

Dave

as far as i know that's it!

i'm not the greatest font of knowledge on this though - someone else will soon correct if i'm wrong i'm sure....

Rich
