Reserve Cable

My next problem.
When you pull out the reserve cable what actually happens, and where does it happen?
I've been running on the "reserve" as I was told that if I pushed in the cable "something doesn't return to where it should and staves the engine of fuel"
I understand the concept of the reserve pipe being lower than the main fuel line but I need to understand how it all works.

There are two fuel lines that run from the tank to the engine bay, the reserve cable connects to a valve in the engine bay which switches between the two feeds. Sounds like you have a problem with the valve / cable arrangement. Or possibly the main fuel line is blocked.

The main supply pipe stands a few inches above the floor of the tank. Thus when the level gets below that, switching to the reserve tank line will give you the remaining few gallons. Also the reserve outlet has a filter on it to prevent debris from the bottom of the tank from getting in the line.
I suppose if there is a fault in your main/reserve switching valve then you must use the only one that works.

That's great, thanks for that. The value under the bonnet. Where should it be located. I haven't seen anything that matches that yet. A clue as to where would be great.

I think this forum is great, so much knowledge. Cheers

Quick tip.

If you drive the car on to ramps or raise the front in some fashion then you will see the fuel lines going towards the engine.

They both go to the tap. I think Ian Wilson does the 'O' Ring which I would change if your going to do anything with the tap cause you wont want to go back to it.

Also make sure that the cable is the solid type the multi strand type ones are no good.
