Replacement alternator

Hello fellow Rover drivers,

i recently replaced a bearing on my alternator because it was making funny noises. It is ok now, but i would like to store a replacement alternator in the spares box for bigger trips just to be on the safe side...
My car is a 3500 V8 with the first generation (short) alternator and the external regulator located in the glovebox. Can somebody recommend a standard (probably Bosch) replacement for this? And what would i have to do with the external regulator? To my knowledge the modern alternators all have integrated regulators. What would you guys recommend?
Sorry for the possible enhanced stupidity of my question, but my senior moments regarding car electrics are few and far between....

I replaced mine with a range rover one off ebay.

I had to get the newer bracket to attach at the front and the longer fan belt.

You can ignore the regulators etc then and just run a wire from the back of the charge light (from memory - i can check the wiring diagram for you!) to the small terminal on the alternator, the other being the thick positive wire. The earth goes through the engine, so it's simplified greatly. Will post again in a bit with more detail...( oh and 120 watt from memory so less chance of having issues on short runs or in bad wweather!)

FWIW when I replaced the alternator on my classic Range Rover I ended buying one for a Metro because its the same thing but was cheaper.
