removeable roof/fold back roof

hi all I have discovered my p6 has a foldable roof. I have tried and tried to get the handle top move but it will only fold out so far and cant be turned or pulled etc.. is this right... how it is supposed to operate??

Hi Coop.
Post a pic of your roofs handle!
It maybe that it has not been open for so long it has seized up,and will need some gentle persuasion!
Or as I have found in the past, due to a roof leaking the owner has bonded it all to the roof stopping the leak but jamming shut the folding section!
Have a read of this post!

here are some pics the first one is of the "wind shield" I have to unscrew one of the brackets to get to the roof handle as it will not fold down

the next two are the handle.

many thanks

The windshield should drop down when it's pulled rearwards so you can get at the handle. The handle should be pulled round anti-clockwise when it's been pulled downwards the way you have shown it.

the wind shield definatly doesn't drop down at any point I took the bracket off yesterday and it will only go one way.
I will try the roof handle one more time to make sure im doing it the right way.

I think I remember that there's a right way and a wrong way that the hinges can be assembled, so maybe you've got one or both incorrect. (There could be a bit of a theme here....Or maybe not...) You should be able to pull it backwards to drop it down to access the handle, then it should stow in the position you show it, and then with the roof open you should be able to lift it and lock it at an angle upwards.

does one simply remove the threaded cap and drive the pin out of the bracket that fixes to the roof lining as apposed to the bit that attaches to the deflector.

also meant to say that the handle that releases the sliding roof defiantly wont move in either direction. is there a way of freeing it manually so I can have a look at what's going on?

many thanks

If as I suspect your roof has not been used for some time, then the sunvisor hinges have probably got a tad stiff!
With it off the car soak them in WD40 and pull out and jiggle about to free them up!
The handle once pulled down slightly should be pulled rearwards and to the passenger side to free the roof!
Again if this is stiff from lack of use it will need gentle persuasion bit by bit until its free!
When it is free you may find the sliding section of roof is also very stiff, again very gentle persuasion will eventually free it off!

im guessing the hinges of the wind break are reversed as Harvey suggested as the pin fouls the bracket and wont move down. as for the roof handle it honestly wont move a mm. I am wondering if someone in the past has "adjusted" it and done it too much and now it wont open cos it wont move from the 3 o'clock position no matter what I do.

many thanks

The hinges are the same which ever way they are fitted, the screw to roof body section has a slightly larger cutout so it can open straight down!
Cant hurt to take them apart, lube and clean and try them again!
As for the opening handle, you may need to use a rubber headed hammer to persuade it right round!
What you need is a rover owner near you with a sunroof who can pop round for a natter and a cuppa, and you can have a bit of a play!

We are all over the UK!
No doubt just round to corner from you as well!
Ask at Wins,he will know who's where locally!
Maybe he can help with it!

well I am going there on Friday so will ask then. I will take pics along of the roof see what he says as I cant take the car there yet with out an mot.

As you can get the lever down an inch or so,get a suitable length "30cm",tube of metal pipe, put it over the handle and use that as extra leverage going towards the rear and to the passenger side!
Work it back and forth if its stiff,as this motion usually helps free off stubborn items!

is there a way of spraying something like wd40 into the mechanism from under the roof??? so I don't damage the vinyl??
many thanks

Not really!
Unless you can release the handle housing just enough to get a WD40 tube in there!
If you just operate the handle carefully back and forth you shouldnt damage the roof vinyl or headlining!

Dave take a few pic of the lock where it goes in to the roof frame.

I think that one I had was a bit stiff, but if you could move the whole thing a bit it released tension. as the handle drops you could get a bit of wood against the handle recess and tap it forward and back with a hammer. I am sure it latches at the front but been about 8 years since I had mine.

The mech is a simple so dont worry about putting a bit of force in to it. obviously not sledge hammer force.

Its a simple hook and hinge mechanism and very robust!
There is a tension spring inside, but you need to remove the headlining to get to any of the mechanism,as its contained in the front wood part of the frame! "see pic"
Its a matter of needs must,so if its leaking and needs fixing it has to be opened, and you will need to use progressive force on the opening lever with an extension to aid leverage.
If it doesnt leak and you dont need to use it,leave it alone!
