rear diff removal

hello I have a leak from the left hand side of my diff, also I have had a vibration at speed so have another set of drive shafts as it has a little knock on pull away, how easy is it to remove the shafts and diff, also where do you support the car.

Thanks Pete

Hi Pete,

There is no need to remove the differential from the car in order to replace either one or both half shafts, or one or both drive shafts.

The oil leak that you have will be from an oil seal, through which the drive shaft passes. To remove the drive shaft, release the four bolts that retain the half shaft to the drive shaft via the disk. Lift the disk clear, then release the bolts that retain the hub into the de dion elbow. Lift the half shaft clear with replacement the reversal.

To remove the drive shaft prior to refitment of the half shaft, remove the bolts that retain the drive shaft into the differential casing. You can see them around the outside of the drive shaft once the disk is clear. From memory there are four bolts. You will of course drain the the oil prior to removing the drive shaft.

Oil seals are available, but you'll need a press to progress any further. Best option if you don't have one to hand is to take the shaft complete to a differential repair centre and allow them to fit the new oil seal.

Replacement back into the differential is the reversal.

Hope this helps,
Ron.

now im lost, not knowing a huge amount about the rover set up so unsure, I have purchased 2 driveshafts with good uj's as when I pull off its knocking on the right so im assuming I am removing the outer shafts with uj, I have also purchased some seals from wins as it has a leak from the left hand side so assumed the diff had to come down to replace seals.

The car is at the paintshop at present so will have a more detailed look when its back.

The output shafts can be removed without removing the diff, but once out there's a collar that needs to be pressed off to get at the seal, and that collar should also be renewed.

Make sure the breather is clear before you start pulling it all apart.

I'm guessing that your outer shafts didn't come with the hub (and therefore the bearings) attached. If that's the case, you'll need to replace the collapsible spacer tube between the bearings. And as that's 20quid or so, it might be more sensible just to replace the faulty UJ on the original shaft.

Just had my left diff drive shaft replaced and the seal done this week. Take the car to Nick Denning at D&G Classics (Surrey, not far from you), Duncan sorted mine in next to no time!
Can be a bit involved if you are trying to do this yourself. The new seal that you have from WINS, needs to be pressed in. Sometimes its easier to fit a good second hand one.... In my case the drive shaft needed replacing also.
When I am unsure of the bits needed to do a job (even with the workshop manual) I find it easier to visit WINS and ask Geoff for exactly all the parts to do a job... They are very good there.

It's not the seal that's difficult, it's pressing the collar off and then replacing the new one, and tbh with the use of a press that's no big deal either.
