Rear crankcase oil seal - Replacing rope type crankcase seal

I am just about to buy a "chinese finger" tool for removing/replacing the rear rope type crankcase oil seal on my V8. (tool obtainable from www.agriemach.com).
Has any member had experience of doing this particular job, and are there any pitfalls to watch out for? Thanks for any info.

I still haven't dared to try this. The penalty if it doesn't work and the new or old seal is neither in or out seems too risky. Is there really no-one who has had a go? It looks easy in the manual (12.21.20). A l;ot easier than removing the engine anyway!

Four years later!; My beautiful corsica blue series 1 that has a guilty secret of incontinently dropping oil through it's rear even though all new filters and fitting a composite better sealing head gasket. These "chinese fingers" are freely sold and there is a section on how to do it in the manual so there must be someone doing it or at least used to. Can anyone point me at a mechanic in the London, South East area willing to take it on or will I really have to get the engine removed and maybe replaced to solve it?

Send me a PM outlining what you want done and I'll put you in touch with someone that I'm sure will be able to do it for you in-situ.

Harvey,
Many thanks for your help. It looks like the problem is solved at last!

I really glad you're happy with the result, and hopefully you can dispense with carrying the cardboard around with you now!

I couldn't resist going up and having a sneaky little peek at your car while it was there, and was impressed with what I saw. Nice to see the PAS on a series 1.

Looking on the bright side, at least all that oil that was pouring out should hold any potential rust under there in check.
