Rear Bump Stop Query

Hello,

My rear bump stops have disintegrated - to the point where the only thing left is (what looks like) the plate of the bump stop and the end of the bolt (from the bump stop) that threads into the chassis. There is not a trace of rubber to speak of. It seems like the plate of the bump stop and the chassis have now become one fused unit - I am pretty sure if I attempt to take it off it would either cause 10 raw knuckles or reveal something I don't want to reveal.

Is the routine to drill out the bolt from the bump stop and then make a new thread for the new bump stop? I am half tempted to cut the bolt part off the new bump stop, grind down the remains off the old bump stop and glue the thing on or a couple of spot welds to keep it in place.

Looking on an old thread from here tells me the thread is 3/8" UNF which is handy.

Try and get the bolt head out first, it is usually bonded in to the bumpstop.

If that fails, I would grind the plate off and make a new one with a falt piece of metal and a suitable bolt.

Unless you like drilling out bolts in awkward positions.

I had the same problem. After removing the remains of the old stop, the plate to which it fits was sound but I could not get the bolt out. I fixed the new one on with Tiger seal (polyurethane adhesive), and it's still there four years later.

Hi,
Providing the area of the mount thread is not corroded i have had many successes of removing bolt by mig welding a large
nut to the domed part left behind.
As soon as it has been welded try to tighten/unscrew when still hot as heat works wonders.
If your lucky to get bolt out run the tap through (3/8 UNF).

In case you may want to leave as is, its NOT part of the MOT requirement to have them fitted ;)
Clive.

I am aware about the MOT - had to check for my own curiosity :)

Thanks for the suggestions - both I had considered. As you say, drilling it is going to be awkward due to suspension components in the way so I'll avoid that if I can. I cannot get anything to grab the domed part of the nut, and if I try turning it by the tabs of the bump stop it just crumbles to bits. The other side doesn't appear to have any tabs on the bump stop - perhaps a generic one was used at one point. I'll see what some heat hammer/slot cut into it does, and if not a bolt will be welded. Not on my drive though it'll have to be the garage as I'm not allowed to do that sort of thing.

I am quite liking the idea of just grinding the surface clean and gluing it on...if it's lasted four years...! I am sure once a bit of rust bonds them together it's there for life anyway.
