rear brakes seized

Hello all, got a slight problem with my rear brakes they're seized on slightly, I know the rears are a pain to work on so was wondering if anyone had any tips on working on them. I've heard you can drop the back axle for easier access just by undoing four bolts?

The rear diff assembly is a heavy item once you disconnect it from the carrier, unless you wish to take the diff out
I would recommend disconnection of the drive shafts to the rear discs & diff flanges, gives much easier access to the
calipers and with the car up on axle stands at the right height to sit on the floor and work on the brakes.

If you scan through this forum there is plenty of advice to glean from previous posts.

Do you know whether the calipers are Girling or Dunlop manufacture ?

Obviously access is always an issue but as mike suggested removing the driveshafts allows much better access. I found that once the discs had been removed I could then wiggle and twist the caliper out without having to remove or lower anything else other than the handbrake linkages. I think it may be worth your while removing the calipers and probably giving them an overhaul as they tend to get neglected, if beyond repair you can just replace them for reconditioned ones. I removed both my rear calipers and discs last year, refurbished one caliper and replaced the other with a 'new' one and fitted brand new discs. Once you have had a good look at the setup it is actually very simple to work on, as I say you just need good access.

Cheers for the replies chaps really appreciated, I'm going to tackle this tomorrow & I'll jack it as high as is safe to try & make things easier for myself. I think half the battle when working under a car is getting into a comfortable position to work in, removing the driveshafts etc sounds the better option, the axle removal sounds like a pretty awkward way to go. Can I ask Mikep the best place to get new discs?

Hi Brian,

IIRC the discs came from JR Wadhams. At the time they had a shortage of discs due to demand. The calipers came from Jeff at Winns.
