Rear axle - Replacement

Need some quick advice from the experts cos I don't know a LOT ABOUT p6s! Going to look at a (supposedly) good condition P6 (1977 2200) later today. I've been told its all in good nick save the rear axle which was damaged in a speed bump accident and is therefore being sold quite cheaply. The rear axle needs repairing / replacing- can this be done as a DIY job? Is it a bolt- on axle? Are second hand axles available and inexpensive? What problems might be encountered with a swap? Any advice much appreciated and needed in a hurry!

I find it hard to believe that the diff got damaged on a speed bump, more likely the dedion tube broke away from the bottom suspension link

I have seen quite a few cars for sale where the owner thinks that the car is beyond saving because of this - you may pay £80 per side for a new dedion end but fitting them is quite an easy job

Thanks mate. Good to hear! I don't know exactly what has happened yet but will post further once I've seen the car.
Cheers.

I agree, It sounds like the De dion tube got damaged opposed to the diff or drive shafts. (although quite possible)

I have had dealings with the bottom link going but this is a simple fix. Sounds thought the tube may have got a whack if it was a speed bump. if it managed to fracture the tube or dent it then it is a simple job to replace.

I have a few De dion photos on my web album, have a look at the link and it will give you an idea of what it looks like in good and bad condition.

To all of the above, which are all quite possible, add the possibility of the toplinks pulling out from the boot floor, and the diff mounting plate breaking in two.

Did you repair the dedion ends or strengthen the replacements for good measure ?

John

Hi John,

I got one replacement which was very good and got it and the other original one for good measure I got a friend to gas weld on the strengthening plates.

I then got them galvanised, I think they chemically dipped or blasted them first. I felt that it was the best way to protect them inside and out. I almost gave up driving P6's after the failure.
