Rear Axle Installment

Hi, I've been Foraging underneath my rover and I decided to check the universal joints and greese them. I noticed i couldnt pull back the plastic guard on one outside axle to check, it cant go over this square metal thin block, not like the other side. My question is, are these metal things factory or have they been added later for balancing or has the universal joints been installed incorectly so that one side is back to front. The black arrows shows what i mean. The green is for the correct installment?

Hello Bert,

Series 2 cars were balanced to a higher standard compared to series 1 cars in terms of drive components. The weights that you have arrowed are factory installments. The fact that you have universal joints which can be greased shows that at some point they have been changed as the OEM items were sealed units.

Thanks Ron great info. I also wonder if any one has any comment about the next 2 pics of one of the axles. first pic is of one side with a tight gap and when i rotate the same axle to the other side there is a gap, going by all the panel work the cars been in an accident. maybe im being fussy.

Hi Bert,

That's a dust cover that has no fixed position. You can increase the gap or decrease it if you wish by using a suitable screwdriver or similar.

ahh thanks ron i tapped it with the hammer and it went flush, i thought it was horribly bent, very deceiving

Hi all. I'm wondering if the boot covering the UJ at the wheel end is necessary? I've fitted new joints, and with these fitted, I won't be able to grease them. Cheers
