Rear axle extension tube oil leak.

Hi all more problems had Robbie on the road a week now after a ten year sabbatical for him and just ironing out the problems. Most recent been oil leaking from the front of the extension tube where the prop shaft joins I know there is a seal listed but how easy are they to change do I have to completely dimantle the assembly?
Cheers all still hoping for beamish if he hold together

Just remove the flange and prise out the seal, but there are two ways that the flange is retained which alter the way it's refitted. Early or late car?

PS Make sure the diff breather is clear.

A timely post! I discovered the same thing when I removed Brown Rover's prop shaft last week. From where does one obtain a seal?

Hi Warren,

I imagine that both JRW and Wins will stock the pinion extension case oil seals.

Don't forget to prime the seal before installation.

Ron.

That's the one Warren!

Probably a good idea to buy two while you're there, keep one as a spare.

Ron.

Sorry been offline yeah Winns or Jrw. What do you mean by priming the seal? So do I just drop the prop shaft an all will become clear and I'm guessing I need to drain the oil first? And finely the breather thing I've looked for this say item no 15 in the trusty Haynes what us it supposed to be and what do I do with it ?
Cheers

No need, just jack it up all round with the front slightly higher than the rear.

It's on the top of the diff casing, it has a cover with a ball bearing inside. Unscrew it (9/16" AF IIRC), clean it out and make sure the ball bearing is rattling about in there.

All I can find in the top is what appears to be a pin or something similar with some kind of cover on it that spins. I'll have a good look tonight
Cheers

Hi Richard,

Lubricate the seal before installation. You will need the car to be level, either raised at both ends by the same amount of resting on the ground, for checking the oil level afterwards. With the filler plug removed, insert your little finger, you should just feel oil on the tip. If you add too much, wait until it stops flowing from the filler hole before replacing the plug.

Ron.

Are the seals on the half shaft outputs similarly easy to replace, Ron? I was thinking I should order those too, instead of a second pinion extension housing seal.

No they're a lot more difficult. The collars have to be pressed off the shafts to get at the seals, and should be replaced by new ones when refitting.

The diff drive shaft oil seals are also a different size to the pinion extension case oil seal, and as such, both types are location specific.

Ron.

That's OK, Ron. I realise they're a different item. I just thought that if they were as simple to replace as the pinion housing seal, I might as well order them and do them at the same time. However mine ain't broke, so as it looks like a more challenging task, I won't fix 'em. I've got enough on my Rover plate right now.

Am I not remembering correctly that some differentials had the breathing slots at the stub axle flanges? I remember mistaking these for leaks when I got my first P-6.

(See Prologue to Operation K4 Page 9K of ROM)

Think maybe I am been a little simple but to get any where the extension shaft seal I need to remove the rear cross member and as good as drop the back axle right out and remove the prop shaft and draw it out if the diff???
I am also really struggling to get at the breather as it is right on top of the diff unless I modify a spanner.
Cheers
Richard

funny you should say that. had a go at getting to the breather on mine at the weekend. wondered if i was missing something.

I'm sure Harvey will let us know if there's some clever trick to this or if it's just really awkward!
