Rear Axle extension location clamp?

When undoing the propshaft at the rear axle extension case end, I came across a loose two piece heavy metal 'clamp' that was simply rattling around on the front part of the extension. The parts book and manual show it, but without a number or explication.
Is this a sort of 'stop' that should butt up against the transverval cross member? Should it be bolted tight or left loose? It seems odd.
Any ideas?

That will be the Damper, which should be rubber-mounted on the casing a few inches behind the mounting bolt.

sounds like you may have lost 3 small rubber spacers which fit bumps on the casing which help hold it in place -also there is usually a metal plate not shown in diagram held on with large worm drive clips. Factory maual says not to remove any of this lot as its 'balanced' at assembly to tune out vibration...

I removed the one on our 2200 for painting, didn't know it was 'balanced' 'til I'd taken it off. I didn't notice any difference when it was all back in place though. During the brief interval that she was roadworthy that is. :D

Thanks for identifying that for me. The thought that it could be a 'harmonic damper' came to me during the day, but I am surprised to find one on a car of this age. It weighs a good 1kg or more, so there must be a few 'bad vibes' going on. It looks like rubber tap washers and a spot of silicone glue should do the trip....if I can get the bolts undone! Thanks again, Philippe

Location on the extension:
You will find three little raised sections on the aluminum extension. These are the locations of the three rubber cushions over which the two steel "clamps" are bolted.

It is a Harmonic Damper & I assume that it works by transmitting vibration through the rubbers & dispersing it into the metal surround therefore reducing noise. I assume......... ???
