Rattling pads in front callipers

Hi Guy's

I seem to remember this was talked about some time ago on this forum.

I've recently had the same problem on my Ford Capri, as I get on my P6 V8. Every time you go over a speed bump, or a pot hole, there is a loud clattering noise from behind the front wheels. Upon inspection on the Capri, on the O/S calliper, it was possible to move one of the pads up and down in the calliper. But on the Capri it was an easy fix! The anti rattle spring was missing. On the old Ford's there is a W shaped spring that locates half way up the pad, and loops under the bottom pad locating pin. This spring not only stops the pads jumping up and down, but also applies slight outward pressure to the pad.

So......I'm going to buy another front pad fitting kit for a Ford Capri, which costs all of 4 quid, drill a hole half way up each pad, and fit the anti rattle springs to the front callipers on the P6! I'll let you know if it works or not :;): :D

High temp silicone or the proprietary anti rattle pastes are a good option on the back of the pads too, if you feel so inclined.

Regards, Andrew.

Had the same problem on the 110 & put rubber tube over the pins which worked a treat. The P6's are supposed to have those 'W' spring but they loop over both pins. Handy fix if the Ford ones work as our P6B has rattly pads. VERY annoying.

Hi Andrew,

I've tried all the paste and copper grease options, but they only seem to be a temporary fix. Around here in Derbyshire the brakes can take a good hammering on some of the hills, and it doesn't take long for them to burn off. Thanks for the thought though :D

No problems! I had a car once, teh front calipers had an unusual sliding piston arrangement for caliper movement. The calipers would creak and stick every time you used teh brakes! No adjustment or grease would help at all, so I know how annoying this sort of little thing can be!

Regards, Andrew.

Yeah, I had a Renault 5 once that used to do that one too! The piston assembly was supposed to slide backwards and forwards on the two pins, but sometimes they would just stick, and you would get smoke pouring out the front wheels!! :O

(oops, I think I just admitted to owning a Renault 5 once.....)

:D :D

back to rattly front brakes....... or rather the lack of them! Finally found a break in the weather today, to take the old boy out for a bit of a rumble, well, go and get parts for other old vehciles with really, but any excuse! :;):

The Capri anti-rattle springs seem to have done the trick, I just hope that it's not the latest layer of copper grease though  I'll post up some piccy's when the boss has got a minute :;):
