Prom night car insurance

I was made redundant 18 months ago so the P6 got parked up and has been ever since. Someone suggested I use the Rover for school prom nights and weddings so it pays for its own expenses etc but it seems none of the regular classic car insurance companies allow it. I have tried Richardson Hosken (turned down point blank) Footman James (Can do it but only if I had been in business and doing it for one year already, and then as a "private hire" vehicle). Can anyone suggest an insurance company that will let me insure it as a 3000 mile limited classic car rather than a private hire taxi? I am now working as a self employed sole trader but not making enough to tax, insure and fuel the Rover solely as a "weekend toy".

I insure the 2000TC with Adrian Flux. It is covered for commuting and I could of had business use but don't need that. Could try them. Otherwise it's trawl the Internet.

I'm with Peter James, seventy eight pounds a year unlimited mileage private use with the usual benefits don't personally know if they do wedding hire etc but worth a try they are the cheapest insurance company I have ever come across..

Doing a quick Google and going by experiences of one or two other classic cars owners I know who have used their cars for special events (for profit and not for profit), my first step would be to contact my local council, explain exactly what you want to do and get their advice?

Three levels of license are required: operator (the person who handles the bookings); driver; and vehicle. Those hiring chauffeured historic vehicles for purposes other than weddings or funerals need all three. The first two should pose no problem, and are not generally hugely expensive. The last is a nightmare as authorities may set their own conditions to determine whether a vehicle is ‘safe and suitable’ and different authorities have different attitudes, some being absolutely rigid in refusing to license anything more than five years old. Conditions, once a vehicle is licensed, can be onerous, such as being required to pass an MoT twice a year.

You'd probably have to pass a Police test to prove a car full of schoolgirls would be safe with you
Would you want them in your car ? They're hardly going to treat it with respect

The more I think about this, if it was me, I would definitely talk to my local council. They should be able to put you in touch with the relevant department that can advise you on licensing and type of insurance needed (its the council that license all the local taxis and private high vehicles). They may even be able to point you at any local small business start up schemes that might be able to help with advice and even some resources to get you up and running?

Gave up on this idea, basically no insurance company would touch it with a barge pole. It would come under the same umbrella as a private hire minicab and I can't see any way even the best P6 in the world would come upto the the required spec. I would have to have a CRB check (which wouldn't present a problem) but is another 70 odd quid. It does make you wonder how others are doing it though....
Rover is going back on the road shortly but will have to be sold around August/September time as my days of classic car ownership and motoring for pleasure are done, struggling to run a 60mpg car never mind a 20mpg car :(

I've had to do this as a favour for friends on a couple of occasions. I never ask to be paid, and just suggest a donation towards the running of the car, to circumnavigate the rules. 8)

Same here Fraser. Never asked for pay but maintenance donations are always greatfully received and very much needed.

I think they generally want huge pink American barges too, as a rule.

but on the plus side the 15 year old girls wont want to be inside a P6 when they could be inside the garish yank tank
