Problems

Just got a request:

"... wonder if you could answer a question about the electrics, as we are a few problems. This is a Rover 2000sc but the wiring loom in the car is a 2200sc. All electric's work, but when I switch on the fog lights switch, the headlights go out, but the side lights stay on. Is this normal even though there is no front fog lights. I have taken the switch apart and the contacts are set for when you go from headlights to fog it does cut the power off from main headlights. And I thought you are still supposed to have front headlight on if the rear fog light are on."

Any advice?

Rudiger,

there is no fault in this. Maybe it is due to old legislation, but in the P6s, when the fog lights are on the headlights are switched off. This has to do with front fog lights only. There was no provision for rear fog lights at the day, so if anyone wants to fit them he could probably wire them through a separate switch.

Rudiger,
I`ve got a 2000 TC and I`m sure mine`s like this, but I`ll check tomorrow for certain and get back to you.

Yep that's normal. The set up was designed long before rear fog lights and is intended to cater for a real pea souper with low mounted front fogs to shine under the fog. Having the headlights on would only throw dazzle back at the driver. You'd only be able to drive at up to say 20mph in these conditions.

Of course, we don't get fog like that any more thanks to clean air legislation.
