Press Car On Ebay... - HXC 199H...

There is a late S1 P6 (in Tobacco Brown) on e-bay at the moment with the reg. number HXC 199H... The car is located in the West Midlands (near Solihull?!). Am i right in thinking that this could be an ex-press car (didn't their reg. numbers have an 'X' in them?). If so it could be well worth restoring...

Hi Grifterkid

I can't find the car your referring to - have you got an Ebay ID No? I guess the auction might have finished in the meantime.

#XC registration's did indeed encompass most factory cars. The reason is that this is the registration letters allocated to the Solihull Road Tax office at the time. So all other cars registered in Solihull area have this reg as well, including, of course, many Rover's sold direct ot the public.

Rover's registered a surprisingly large number of cars as factory cars. As well as the sexy experimental cars and press demonstrators this included all the cars given to managers, foremen etc etc as company cars. The whole industry used this route as a safety valve to absorb production at slack sales times of the year, and the cars might well be sold on after as little as 4 to 6 months.

Bottom line is that to determine whether or not it is of interest, first clue is to look at the spec, second is to take a trip to Gaydon to inspect the factory Register, where they are all listed (except that one year is missing (1965?)) with what purpose they served, who they were allocated to etc etc.

Regards

Chris

The register (I think) from approx 1962 to early 1966 is missing, which is sad. It is possible that it may still be at Solihull and may appear one day. Would certainly clear up a couple of mysteries.

Recent info has come to light on the index plates of several of the very early 2000's (the cars immediately after 4000001A -101FGO)

The Tobacco Leaf 2000 on eBay has been discussed here before - the guy must have spent a fortune listing it by now - it's been on numerous times. I believe Mark Gray has actually seen it and it is, by all accounts, a shed..

It's a bog standard 1969 2000 and may or may not have an interesting history. Next time I get to Gaydon I'll have a look.

Cheers
Nick
