Powerless engine - no urge when accelerating

My P6B has developed a problem. The engine starts nicely with good oilpressure and choke about halfway out. After driving a couple of hundred meters I stop momentarily at a redlight or a crossing. When pulling away the engine seems powerless. I have to really floor the accelarator to get it going. The car then slowly and hesitantly gains speed and after a couple of hundred meters it´s normal. This has happened three times recently. I intend to change the sparkplugs, ignitioncables and flametraps. Any other suggestions? It´s my first Rover, so i´m grateful for any suggestions.

We get the same thing occasionally & at first I thought it was fuel evaporation, but as it can happen when the engine is stone cold & it's not a hot day, I'm not so sure. I suspect reconditioning the fuel pump may help as a few years ago our P5B did the same thing just before the fuel pump fell apart.
You can try your service items first though as you never know your luck.

If it's cold where you live it could be carburretor icing up. Is your engine warming up quickly ? Bit hard to cure as there's no provision for a warm air intake. You could check the pipe from the manifold to the radiator is clear as that helps the carbs warm up

is the choke still 1/2 way out? I know from my 2000 it gets warm quite quickly and I used to stall it untill I put choke in, then it runs ok.

A very big thanks to you who answered my question. I must say that this is the best forum I´ve come across yet. Very good site. I think I´ll have to give the carbs and the fuelpump a going over.

I would also have a look at the fuel lines - especially where they route from the boot to being under the car - I had similar problems and the metal pipe was seriousely corroded allow in the pump to suck through air as well as fuel

Hi Paxe and welcome to the forum.

If your planning on doing some serious work on the carbs, you might like to look at a post I put up in July 2005 - "V8 Engines - carburettor balancing".

All the best
