Power Steering

My 1975 Rover 3500 auto suffers from what i can only call a lack of self centering IE steering wheel will not self center when car is on the move. when car turns to right there is some self center but on turning to the left there is very little to none. Any ideas

I think it's usually down to the castor angle or tracking settings that cause problems with this. Check the bushes on the lower arms first and maybe the ball joints too as they can throw the geometry out if worn. Once they're ok then get the tracking measured

It is my understanding that self centering is a function of "toe in", and this can be changed by adjusting the length of the track rod. Either a tyre and brake centre or a steering specialist will be able to check and make the adjustment,..(that is the plan anyway). You will just need to furnish them with the toe in details which is 3.0mm toe in + / - 1.5mm.

Castor is not adjustable, but camber can be by changed by placing shims as required behind the top link.

Ron.
