Power Steering problem when cold

When I start my car up the power steering is a little noisy and indeed not fully operational ... it has plenty of fluid, but is wurry. I was wondering if this is a symptom of extreme cold temperatures?

Hi there TP,
I'm no expert on these yet, but I think maybe it is to do with the temperature, I've had the oil freeze up in my bikes these last few weeks, even my ratchet froze whilst working on my starter motor yesterday. I would imagine the oil would thicken up and strain the pump slightly and could explain your symptoms, (especially if the car lives outside) hopefully someone with more experience can advise, all the best with it.

Easiest thing to try initially is replacing the filter in the reservoir, the cold will mean the fluid is thicker and will have more difficulty flowing through the filter especially if it's a bit blocked. If it gets too blocked the fluid can get forced out of the vent hole in the cap. This can cause air to get into the system which can cause the noise & loss of assistance.

Thanks for that. Where are these filters available from. Have never changed one, simple job?

Most P6 suppliers sell the filters, although IIRC "Arthuy" who posts on here had some so it may be worth trying him first.

The filter fits inside the reservour, and shouldn't be a problem for someone who's fitted a TP V8 into his P6.........
