Re: Connor,,1970 Early S2,2000 sc auto for sale

I have a slightly unrelated query. Whats the deal with date of registration being Jan 1st? I've seen it on a few UK cars (my estate included) and find it hard to believe that the Post Office was actually open on New years day to do all these regos. Is it some kind of dealer's trick to make the car look like next years model or something? Register it in mid December but declare the date as January?

its really to do with the tax starting at beginning of month,it could be backdated but most didnt want to loose out a few weeks worth of tax,so started beginning of month after purchase.
Also Xmas and NY had to get pre registered date before holidays

Its all to do with when suffix letters were introduced in 1963, the letter change happened at
the beginning of the year on Jan 1st but car dealers complained that it made for a busy time
over Chrismas and new year. So in 1967 they changed it to August 1st as new model year.
Which incidentally is why there are not many 'E' reg cars. Up until 1974 new years day wasn't
a bank holiday.

There endeth the lesson. Colin

Most buyers of new cars leading up to xmas and new year will get the "new model",and there is a certain oneupmanship about buying an old model car in say 1970,but having it registered as a 71,makes it feel newer to the owner.
It has been and will always be a busy time for them, despite the new registration date now being twice a year, and thats only a cheap ploy by the gov't to try and push sales up.
Far simpler to just have, AB 01 AB 02 etc, that will do us till 2099,gives them more combinations than they will ever sell!
And dealers still have big parties on new years day,and some even do it on xmas day,""they love it"" for new owners to collect their new car "wifes prezzie" or new year car!
And of course it makes sense to have the tax start from the beginning of a month! :)
Why waste a few quid backdating it
