Position of wingard door mirrors

Hello to all, Although ive been a member for several years i have always been able to obtain help via this excellent forum without having to post, untill now. Can anyone please post a picture of the correct position for the 2 Wingard door mirrors that i have and require fitting on my 3500 mk 11. After breaking the bank in buying them i want to make sure they go where they should do.Hope someone can help. Regards

I'm guessing it's not in those manuals then
Unless someone beats me to it I'll look for a pic when I have a min :)

Here is an old copy of P6 News from October 1995 answering the same question that I raised in the August. How times have changed, we no longer have to wait 2 months for a reply to a letter published 1-2 months after we sent in the questions!

It doesn't say that this is for the Winguard, but I guess measuring up and checking the distance between centres will confirm.

Aren't forums wonderful!!

Richard (webby) - this should be in the P6 Index, but it's showing as N/A. you should definitely have it ???

Brian.

That article by John Glinn (well found Brian!) mentions a quarterlight mirror. I've been looking round for one of these that fits the P6, but all the ones I've seen only have a narrow fixing channel to fit a gutter.

I'm assuming I'd need one with a wide enough channel to go round the door glass frame...or am I missing something? Anyone got one fitted? And a source?

Quality Components in Kendal don't show up on Google's radar, but 1995's a long time ago...doesn't seem it though! I'll email John as well.

Cheers,

Position was a bit hit and miss!!
As they went on, where they went on, by whoever fitted them at the time.factory or dealer!
Get a mate to hold the p/side one in rough position so that the view to it is not blocked by the quaterlight bar,"" and the Q light opens"",,and then fit the d/side on in about the same place.
Heres a pic from a door that had them fitted..

Yep...my driver's door's got 2 nutserts let in at about 112mm centres (4.7/16"?). The mirror's not Wingard but looks it..and it needs replacing. Is this the Wingard spacing?

The nutserts mean I need a long base mirror to either hide or marry up with them. There's some Tex mirrors often on ebay but they're round...I think Dan (tantus pedis) has fitted these.

This is the Wingard on the driver's side of my old 2200 auto. Correct position. I've driven cars where they'd been inaccurately positioned, and the quarterlight wouldn't open...

Thank you to every one for your help. Now my doors will not resemble swiss cheese as i know where to drill ist time. Yet again this forum is the Oracle of all knowledge.

Any update on this, as I'd be quite keen to fit one if a suitable one is available.

I have just fitted two to my 2000TC, one each side as I am shortly taking her to Italy and the mirrors on the wings are useless -spring mounted, the springs have obviously weakened since 1970 and they almost flapin the wind - they certainly move about too much to be of any use!

I bought two bullet shaped chrome quarterlight mirrors (from e-bay) and was also stumped when they arrived. As you say the clamp is too narrow to fit anywhere. I then tried to fit them to my other cars - MGBGT, mini, Riley Elf - all to no avail.
I was on the point of sending them back when I noticed an MGB parked outside a local classic restorers with the same type of mirror fitted - clamped on the quarterlight glass itself!!
I eqnuired with the owner and garage and discovered this is the acceptable method of fixing, although I must say i wouldn't have considered doing so until I saw it done.
I have fitted mine now and must say they have worked well but there are a couple of drawbacks.
With the mirror clamped on to the rear of the quarterlight the quarterlight still opens and closes, (obviously your mirror is useless when you drive with the quarterlight open) but the clamp on the "inside" of the quarterlight pushes the seal in and distorts it. This hasn't allowed water in but I have noticed increased windnoise at speed.
The mirror employs two ball and socket joints for positioning and adjustment - I thought I would prolong the life of the mirror, dismantled it and greased evrything before fitting. MISTAKE! Couldn't get sufficient friction in the ball joints to hold it - it just drooped straight away!!! Spent ages dismantling and thoroughly degreasing again!!

The type I bought is e bay number
260612977559

There are other alternatives

I will post pictures of mine when I get home tonight.

and the inside - could be made better by reducing length of the allen bolts which distort the sealing rubber - (when I have time) - it would then be interesting to see if that reduces the extra windnoise!

I am not convinced about this fitting method it only needs a nudge by someone walking past or a
car thief giving it a clout, and there goes the quarter light. At best you have you replace the quarter
light at worst you could lose the car.

Hi - many thanks for your observations, it is indeed a personal matter whether you feel that an aftermarket modification such as this is suitable for your needs or not, I am quite happy with it, but obviously those that are not simply will not make such a mod.

As regards anyone nudging, the mirrors are supported by two ball joints and will simply move (quite a lot actually),

Car thief? Last think a car thief would want to bother with on a Rover 2000 is smashing a quarterlight, they are built to 1960's security levels, coathanger, nylon strap, screwdriver, many a worn key will admit you to nearly every Rover P6 without the need to smash a quarterlight !!
