PISTONS FOR BOOT?

Can anyone suggest pistons that would fit inside and on the underside of the boot of a Rover P6, Im guessing you need two and a picture would be helpful...

I presume you mean modern bootlid, hatchback gas struts?
Best thing to do is get a couple with the fittings from a scrapyard and experiment with positioning them.

That's the ones; Im sure someone on this forum has fitted some to make opening and closing easier when the spare wheel is mounted? Im curious to know whether two would be needed?

Even with the wheel mounted on the boot because the hinges are sprung loaded anyway it's not difficult to open. You'd have to be pretty infirm not to manage it. If you can't open the boot, you certainly won't be able to lift the wheel and tyre onto the bootlid to mount it. The more gadgets you put on to open it, the harder it's going to be to close.

Ok, I'd rather not have to add more hardware and no doubt I'll have no problem opening it if and when the time comes...

How about just a handle--series 1---got it off my spare doors

The handle comes with the kit, so should be there.
oh ok I didnt know that my spare wheel stuff came of a banger car for a tenner :D
reckon Vauhall Omega might be best bet for struts and ball fittings--they unbolt

If you want the look but not the weight and keep the spare in the boot,I know a guy who made a wheel shape out of strong dense foam block.

Good idea, and that spawns other uses for the space on the boot such as a mobile coffee machine or a BBQ

Whip off the cover of the spare shaped boot accessory to reveal a coffee machine, you would be the envy of all your friends and think of all the comments you would gain at car shows..... possibly one of the most talked about and memorable cars at any show

Rover 75 bonnet struts are suitable. They have the ball fitting.

You would need to make a bracket for the aluminium lid though.

Is there not a way to adjust the hinge to give stronger lift?

I 've looked in to it quite extensively as i have been through about 3 different sets of (used) hinges and the results varied from complete inability to hold the bare bootlid open, to barely keeping it open with the car level. With the car facing uphill it is stil a problem. Unfortunately the hinges are not adjustable. I have looked in to ways of modifying them by making the torsion bars stiffer, but i did not manage to come up with anything successful. As a last resort i fitted a pair of small coil springs that pull on the hinges. They do help, but there is not enough space to achieve higher leverage for better results. What is utterly frustrating is that i have experienced P6s that the bootlid just sprung open when you released the lock. I wonder if my bootlid is too heavy (a previous painter that was too enthousiastic with the filler?) or i was just unlucky with the hinges i am using...

Why don't you just fit the correct bracket?

Its the lifting up opening and closing weight thats made easier Chris!
Some owners do find it a bit on the heavy side.
Having the bracket only keeps it up when open.
