P6 Pickup???

Just seen a Triumph dolomite pickup in the classifieds in practical classics and got to thinking, could a P6 make a good pickup?

A photo can be seen in James Taylor's book 'Rover P6' on page 171 of a Pick up, which started life in 1972 as a 3500 Police car!
According to DVLA website the Date of Liability was 01 11 1995, so most probably long gone.

Yes I recall seeing that in JT's book.

I dont recall seeing one in the flesh though.

There are a number of "convertibles" about so see no reason why a pickup is not viable. All things considered its probably easier to execute and much stronger than the DIY convertibles.

I once saw an SD1 pickup it was owned by motorcycle trials rider Sammy Miller and he used it to transport his bikes around. I often saw it at Fort William during the Scottish Six Day Trial which must be about 600 miles from where he was based on the south coast and given the choice of a 1200 mile round trip in an early eighties transit van or v8 sd1 pickup I think I would have chosen the rover too.

I knew someone with a 6 wheel crewcab SD1 pickup which he used (and may still be using) to transport a pair of jet skis.

A P6 pickup could be quite nice if done properly.

There are/were two p6 pickups on the Isle of Wight. They were owned by a builder.
If I can be bothered I may have some pictures somewhere in my vast collection of stuff...

Ooo interesting, I've not seen them in the 10 years I've lived on the island. Love to see the pics. :)

I removed the entire rear section from my XK120 Drophead because of rust, and faced with the probability that I will never be able to replace it, I have entertained the thought of dropping on a box, and having a rather fast Jaguar pick-up.
Of course everyone that I mention this to has reacted with horror.

Each to thier own , of course , but aren't there financially better options - like find one with a ruusty front end ?

These are extremely rare here in the states, although I have owned two of them. Rust here in New England is as bad a problem as anywhere.
