hi all,

I've recently brought a 1972 series 2 p6 2000. that's the good bit. unfortunately the previous owner has put a 2lt turbo diesel from a Toyota in it o_O not sure why and I didn't want to ask as it was going for a bit of a steal.

anywho, I foolishly didn't do my research and thought the v8 would go straight in but now im told different. soooooooo what needs to be done? heeeeellllppppppp

Pretty much everything on the base unit from the bulkhead forwards is different, as are various suspension parts. As with most things it can be done, but in this case it's not really worth it.

dam it, I may have brought the wrong car :( might have to look at other engine options then. any v8's that will fit in it?

If you really want a V8 then you'd be better off selling it and buying a 3500, or do you want to go fast?

There are other ways of going quick using what you've got, but as you want the sound of a V8, you really need to buy a 3500 and go from there.

nuts, so tell me more of these going fast options, I may have to make a sacrifice as it took enough to get this one past the mrs

I've got a Saab 2.3 turbo engine on my engine stand in the workshop being adapted for rwd in my 2000, to replace the worn Rover twincam turbo already in it ;). There are a few other modern-ish 4 cylinder turbo conversions in progress that I'm aware of.

Just be warned that the back axle really isn't up to much abuse, and there are no off the shelf bolt-on budget upgrades for it either. Same with suspension upgrades, though there is a lot of interest in upgraded ARB's which will hopefully lead to a ready supply of good value uprated ARB's available.

I'm sure I'm not the only one interested in hearing (and seeing photos) about the conversion that's already been done to the car. How well it fits, whether it really is that bad to drive, does it retain the original gearbox or a 5 speed that came with the engine, etc...
If it's been done tidily, it might actually have more value than you think.

For myself a 2L toymotor turbo sounds a really good upgrade over the original lump

Sorry, but why won't it fit? The first P6B prototypes were 2000s, with no modifications.

I know that some of the suspension components are different, but a) you can keep it 2000, or b) swap them out.

The engine will fit, but you'll need to make some modifications - mount points for a start.

It's been done before, and will be a tight fit. Another option is to buy NOS inner wings and swap them over. They're available, and not too expensive.

The crossmember is in a different position as well. It can be done, but it's a load of work.

You can't just change the 4 pot parts for V8 ones because the mounts on the base unit are in different places.

you could just up the boost on the diesel??? You have an engine and most diesels can be tuned. They are horrid noisy smelly things but scrapping things is morally wrong ...

Sorry all, not been on to respond, basically got the car for a bargain and wanted to go v8 but as discovered that's not to be. The Toyota engine is a 2ltr turbo diesel from a cabstar on an auto box. Not a huge fan of diesels and want something that makes a nice sound. It drives ok but seems down on power.
