Old style white letters on black plate number plates.

Yes, don't make the common mistake thinking it's the date it was registered. I've seen on modern with a private old plate in this style, I bet it was not long before it was pulled over. Mine was built on 12th September 73 (one of the very last 2000's) so I miss out on having the very stylish old style plates. :( When I get a bigger house I plan on getting myself a Series 1 car. :) Just have to sneak it past the Misses. ;)

Thanks for the replies. I thought the C reg car I saw with the white on black plates was not legal...

Then again, why is it illegal to have them?

i dont know why it's the law, but to me yellow on black just seems so common(not biased by my motor at all)... and black/silver on a modern looks wrong too - saw a particularly nasty merc 190 last night with 'blinged' black and silver number plates....:eek:D

Oh what a comedian! Gives this man some a big round of applause!

I am aware it's the law, I am asking why is that the law? Is there a reason for it or not? :D

I doubt many of us mere mortals are privy to the inner workings of Government minds (?) and why certain laws are introduced, other than to increase the tax burden. :)

The incoming Labour Government in 1997 introduced a cutoff for Historic Vehicles as those manufactured before 1st January 1973, and I assume the display of black and white number plates is only legal for such Historic Vehicles.

There, that better? :)

Got to agree there with you!

That's much better, vaultsman! :D :p

Reflective number plates were introduced as a safety measure ,The early types, with the aluminium backing , had a reflective coating like road signs This benefit must be lost with the perspex plates

Don't forget you can still run the early raised style of plates, as long as they are yellow/black.

I bought mine from Framptons (they were not for a P6) and they look much more period than the black and silver pressed ones. Framptons delivered them within 20 hours of me placing my order, too - I'm a satisfied customer.

My ('70) P6 currently runs horrible black/silver plastic reflective plates, like this:

I've promised I'll get some nice ones if it passes the MOT next month first time.

Just my thoughts on this subject.

Reflective plates came in in 1968 and many people replaced the black/silver plates on older cars then to make them look more modern. By about 1971 most new cars had reflective plates (although Rover factory cars still had black/silvers until the end of 1972). It's far more 'correct' to have reflectives on your Series II, that's what the car originally had. Black/silvers just look wrong to me on most Series II's.

If you've got the original reflective plates on your car keep them there, that's how the car was when new (let alone them being illegal for all vehicles post January 1st 1973).

Cheers
Nick

On a (1970) Series 1, would they have been black/silver metal plates, or the raised letter type? :)

Thanks,
Jim.

I have to say I much prefer the classic white/grey/silver on black plates for a P6, series 1 or series 2!

Regarding 1970 series 1 cars. The car that donated the 2000TC unit and box for our old 2000Auto was a J reg with reflective background and raised black lettering/numbers. Our old 2000Auto was a late K reg (20th July 1972) with reflective background and raised black lettering/numbers also. I would have loved it to have the classic style plates!
