oil quantity

Can you damage the engine if you run it with too much oil in - does the pressure go through the roof?

thanks everyone

Pressure shouldn't be a problem, the main problem is that oil can get forced up through the breathers, and back into the engine through the intake. So you get oil being burnt.
Depends how much excess oil you have in it.

It wouldn't be too hard to drain some out from the sump, you could even take it all out, then just pour the same oil back in without overfilling.

depends on how much you over fill by!!!

there is a point when the crank webs start hittingn the oil and aeareating it, a bit like whisking an egg white - this will get get into the system and as the oil is thinner wear increases.

And filling up further to the point that the pistons start hitting oil is very bad; pistons make break and rods bend - it is unlikekly you would get the engine to start anyways.

a long time ago I heard a story where a woman had filled up the engine with oil until is started to come out of the dip stick tube :p

i think everyone has at sometime heard of someone filling up the sump till it either come out of the dipstick or leval with the oil filler

I have also heard of one engine where you could gain 6 bhp by running with the oil at the minimum mark on the dipstick !

Years back a Lady & her Daughter from over the Road knocked & asked us to have a look at their Mk2 Escort as it wouldn't start after they had topped up the oil. They had topped it up until they could see the oil surface through the Rocker cover.
I kid you not................We drained it & put the right amount back & it was fine. :)

One thing to check is that the fuel pump diaphragm has not punctured and let petrol into the engine to dilute the oil.

If so , do not start the engine as there is an explosion rissssk
Dave

Good tip Dave, but its not that, partly because its got an electric pump, but mainly its my own fault! I thought more had drained out during anouther task than actually had and it surprised me when it read high on the dipstick.

Now the faulty wiring is sorted the only risk of explosion is from the driver! *@£!ing Nissan Micra drivers!
