oil pump gasket

Gentlemen, happy Easter - My oil pump is leaking and in order to fit a new gasket I have to dismantle the oil pump cover. Question: one of the fixing screws is very hard to get to with a 8 mm multihex spanner as the space is too small, how do I change the gasket in situ? any ideas? - when replacing the gasket, is it neccesary to use sealing compound or would that be a sin? Regards, Chris Varming

hi, wouldn't of thought u could change the gasket with the cover on as the bolts/studs will be in the way. ie either the gasket will have to slip over the studs or the bolts will have to go through the gasket. As to using a sealant I personally don't believe in using them unless the instructions say so. I am a firm believer of if it is designed to work like that why add to it and cause headaches down the road when u come to remove it. (yes I have had blazing rows with exhaust places when they have tried to use exhaust paste in copious amounts because they are too lazy to do the job properly).

just my two cents ...someone will be along shortly and probably completely disagree
hope it helps

Hi, it is one of those character building jobs. I use a combination spanner which are a bit shorter
and flatter, they are consequently easier to move around. I don't use a sealant because any that is
squeezed out into the pump can cause problems. Plus with the pump packed with vaseline it won't
stick anyway, just smear some vaseline or oil on to hold the gasket in place. I undo the awkward
one first and do it up last, that way you don't have the pump cover exerting a side load on it.

Make sure the gasket you replace is identical.

Some don't have all the punch outs and will cause problems if fitted.

Thanks for your advice - after several attempts I mannaged to get the special fixing screws off with a combination spanner as suggested by Colin. Chris Varming
